Nina Chase on ‘FBI’ and the Long Road From Temporary Agent to Series Fixture

Fans of the CBS procedural often ask about Nina Chase, the agent played by Shantel VanSanten who has drifted in and out of the series over the years. Her storyline has covered a stand in assignment, a surprise pregnancy, a spinoff move and a wedding, so it is easy to lose track of where she stands. This look at Nina Chase on ‘FBI’ pulls the timeline together.

The short version is that her status has changed more than once, and the answer to whether she is leaving depends on which stretch of the show you mean. Here is how the character arrived, why her exit questions kept coming up, and where she is today.

Who Is Nina Chase on ‘FBI’

Shantel VanSanten plays Nina Chase, a special agent in the New York office of the FBI. She is described as a skilled investigator who previously worked at the bureau’s Houston office. VanSanten first appeared on the series near the end of season four and continued through season five.

Nina was never meant to be a permanent fixture of the flagship team. She was never a series regular in the role, and her extended presence helped the show navigate a stretch of time without Missy Peregrym. She played the part as a special guest star during Peregrym’s most recent maternity leave.

VanSanten described the arrangement plainly to TVLine when she said “The plan was always to do these 10 episodes” before Peregrym returned. She was promoted to recurring status as Nina joined Jubal’s team as a temporary member.

Why Fans Asked If Nina Was Leaving ‘FBI’

The questions about an exit started with the structure of the role itself. Observers noted that Nina’s tenure could be short lived because she essentially stepped in for Peregrym while the actress was away. Once Maggie Bell was set to return, the question became what would happen to the agent who had been covering her desk.

The answer came in the sixth episode of season five. Nina announces that she is leaving the team and will work out of the white collar division to clear her head. Scola is the father of her child, and she kisses him in an emotional goodbye before she goes.

The departure did not mean a death or a permanent write off. Showrunner Rick Eid told TV Insider “We didn’t want to kill Nina off.” He added that she remains an FBI agent, that her relationship with Scola would continue in some capacity, and that viewers would see her again soon.

The scare did not end there. Nina was shot while helping the Fly Team storm a house in Italy during a crossover event. She survived, and so did her child. She then faced a medical crisis involving her baby in the season five finale. Even then, there was no confirmation that VanSanten was leaving the show.

Where Shantel VanSanten’s Nina Chase Went Next

The real change in her career with the franchise came through a spinoff. A report from Deadline said VanSanten would shift over to ‘FBI Most Wanted’ during its fifth season and reprise her role as Special Agent Nina Chase. In that season premiere she made her series regular debut on the spinoff.

That move kept the character busy even as she stepped away from the flagship team. Her story was expected to expand in the sixth season of the spinoff, after the previous season focused on her professional life as a newcomer. She was not entirely absent from the parent series either. VanSanten headed back to ‘FBI’ to show how Scola and Nina handled working together after their baby was born.

That crossover appearance placed the couple in a risky assignment. During their dangerous undercover job, Scola worried that their son Doug could end up parentless. It gave the character a way back into the flagship series without undoing her move to the spinoff.

What Nina and Scola’s Story Looks Like Now

The spinoff itself eventually ended. ‘FBI Most Wanted’ was cancelled last spring, and VanSanten returned to ‘FBI’ as a guest star. She is no longer a series regular, which means she is free to work on other projects.

Her return arrived with a milestone for the couple. The midseason premiere of the eighth season featured the wedding of Stuart Scola and Nina Chase. The two get married after Nina’s dangerous undercover operation. Nina and Maggie went undercover in the installment, which centered on a cartel wedding.

The episode also raised a practical question about her place on the team. One reviewer noted that there is not a clear place for Nina on the team since Scola has a new partner in Eva Ramos. Another pointed out that none of Nina’s friends from the spinoff attended the ceremony, and that Nina would have preferred an even smaller one.

So is Nina Chase leaving ‘FBI’? She left the main team years ago, moved to the spinoff, and has now come back as a guest star with a husband, a son and an open future. Whether Nina keeps a foot in the field or settles into a quieter role alongside Scola is the question that will define her next chapter, and it would be interesting to hear whether you want to see her back on Jubal’s team or working her own cases.
