Chris Rock has had a big year behind the camera. He directs ‘Misty Green’, a dark drama about an Emmy-winning actress struggling with self-destructive habits while her brother, who lives with mental illness, is released from an institution after funding for his care runs out.

Rosalind Eleazar leads the film alongside Daniel Kaluuya, with Rock, Topher Grace, Anna Kendrick, Alexandra Shipp and Adam Driver also in the cast. The film walked the red carpet at the New York Film Festival in September, and theGrio called it a dark, compelling look at Hollywood’s pitfalls.

That success helped earn Rock a spot among GQ’s 2026 Men of the Year. In his cover interview, however, the comedian used the spotlight to talk about something far more personal than his latest film.

Rock admitted that he was not a great husband during his marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock. As People reported, he said he watched a lot of pornography during that time. He also explained that he has since stopped, saying he hasn’t watched porn in about 5 or 6 years. Rock acknowledged that it isn’t something he’s proud of, but said it was something he had to go through.

Rock also reflected on what that period taught him about himself. He told GQ he came to realize that he wasn’t God or anywhere close to it. The comedian compared his past self to a Marvel character testing out his powers. Looking back, he said he was severely humbled, and that he deserved to be.

He has previously acknowledged cheating during the marriage. The new interview offers one of his most open reflections yet on how his own behavior affected the relationship. Rock and Compton-Rock were married for nearly 2 decades. The couple split in 2014, and their divorce was finalized in 2016, with Rock filing.

They share 2 daughters, Lola Simon and Zahra Savannah. Since the divorce, Rock has said he won’t use their personal relationship as material in his comedy. He has also acknowledged the imbalance in how their story gets told. In 2017, he told Rolling Stone that it wasn’t fair because he had a microphone and she didn’t.

The interview also touched on how Rock has moved past one of the most public moments of his career. The Hollywood Reporter framed the GQ story around his decision to give up porn and how he has moved on from the “crazy night” of the Oscars slap.

Rock has made it clear in other recent interviews that he isn’t eager to return to the Oscars. He told Variety he would only go back if he were nominated. For now, Rock’s focus is on ‘Misty Green’. The film puts him in the director’s chair while also giving him an on-screen role as Jordan Green.

Critics have especially praised Eleazar and Kaluuya’s performances, while noting some uneven moments in its storytelling. Even so, the project marks a notable creative step for Rock.

His willingness to talk openly about his flaws adds another layer to that new chapter. At this point in his career, Rock seems more interested in honesty than in protecting his image.
