Courteney Cox and Melissa Barrera’s friendship has outlasted the ‘Scream’ franchise that brought them together. The 2 first met on the set of 2022’s ‘Scream’, in which Cox returned as Gale Weathers and Barrera made her debut as Sam Carpenter.

Their bond formed quickly. In a conversation Cox conducted with Barrera for Interview Magazine ahead of the film’s release, Cox said, “I met you, and immediately I knew that you were someone I’d be close with forever,” she told Barrera in Interview Magazine.

That closeness was on display again this week. As ‘Scream’ fan account QG Scream shared, Barrera posted a new update on Instagram that includes a smiling selfie of the 2 actors together outdoors.

Cox quickly showed her support in the comments. She asked what Barrera can’t do, adding a string of celebratory emojis and an enthusiastic “yes”, a message fans immediately read as a proud, maternal cheer.

The pair’s off-screen chemistry has been clear for years. In their Interview Magazine conversation, Cox recalled that the cast stayed at the same hotel during filming and still shared a group text.

Cox also credited Barrera’s warmth with drawing people in, saying people can be themselves around her. Barrera, in turn, said the friendships made on the film would last, describing how close a cast becomes while making a movie together.

The 2 have also shown off a playful side together. Around the release of ‘Scream’, Cox posted a video in which she bumps into Barrera outside the Manhattan building used for Monica Geller’s apartment in ‘Friends’.

In the clip, Barrera does a Monica impression, and Cox jokingly tells her that impersonating her character is off limits and sends her back to ‘In the Heights’. Cox captioned the video, saying some things are off limits, while Barrera replied in the comments with a nod to the ‘Friends’ theme song.

Barrera has also spoken about what she has learned from her co-star. In a 2022 interview with NewBeauty, she described Cox as a sharp, savvy businesswoman who taught her to speak up for what she wants, especially in contract negotiations.

Barrera also said Cox encourages collaboration on set with the mindset that the best idea wins. She even shared that she once gave Cox a skincare tip about moisturizing right after a shower.

Barrera’s time in the franchise ended when she was removed from ‘Scream 7’ following her social media posts about the war in Gaza. In a May interview with Variety, she said she spoke out for peace and that job offers nearly dried up for about a year afterward.

She has since moved forward with new projects, calling a role offered by Boots Riley a turning point and describing this stage of her life as her “Chapter 2”. New York Theatre Guide also lists her in the Broadway production of ‘Titanique’, which ran from March 26 to September 20.

Barrera has said her former ‘Scream’ castmates always find each other when they’re in the same place, describing them as lifelong family in a 2024 interview with Deadline. Her latest post with Cox suggests that bond is still going strong. For fans of the franchise, the moment offers a warm reminder that some of its strongest connections exist off-screen.

What do you think of Courteney Cox and Melissa Barrera's friendship continuing beyond the Scream franchise?
