Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Social Reckoning’ Heads to Digital After a Rough Box Office Run
‘The Social Reckoning’ arrived in theaters with high expectations. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the follow-up to ‘The Social Network’ dramatizes the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen, drawing on Jeff Horwitz’s reporting in ‘The Facebook Files’ for The Wall Street Journal.
Mikey Madison stars as Haugen, with Jeremy Allen White as Horwitz and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg. Sony released the film through Columbia Pictures on October 9. Less than 2 months after its theatrical debut, the film is already heading home. As The Hollywood Handle reported, ‘The Social Reckoning’ will be released on digital platforms on November 24.
According to the same post, the film has earned $16 million globally so far against a $30 million production budget. The Numbers lists a slightly higher worldwide total of about $17.8 million, including roughly $9.1 million domestically and $8.6 million internationally.
The film’s box office struggles began early. It opened to an estimated $5.5 million from 2,606 North American theaters, landing in 5th place for the weekend, according to the Associated Press.

That debut fell well below early projections, with MovieWeb noting that Variety had expected a domestic opening of $7 million to $8 million. The film also earned a B- CinemaScore from audiences.
The film lost momentum quickly. ThePrint reports that its earnings dropped about 72% in its second weekend to roughly $1.4 million. By its third weekend, the film had gone from 2,606 locations to just 619, losing about 76% of its theaters. That rapid drop helps explain the quick move to digital.
The comparison to Sorkin’s earlier Facebook film has been hard to avoid. ‘The Social Network’, which Sorkin wrote and David Fincher directed, opened to more than $22 million and went on to earn over $224 million worldwide on a reported $40 million budget, according to Looper.

Critics have also been cooler on the new film. Looper reports that ‘The Social Reckoning’ holds a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 96% for ‘The Social Network’, which won 3 Academy Awards.
Analysts have pointed to several possible factors. Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian told the AP that topical movies sometimes resonate with the culture and sometimes don’t, adding that October releases are always a gamble for studios.
Looper suggested that shifting public views of social media and its founders may have made the subject a harder sell. It also noted that Facebook’s reputation had already taken a serious hit by the time the film arrived.

Beyond its 3 leads, the film features Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku as members of Zuckerberg’s legal team, along with Billy Magnussen and Betty Gilpin. The wider cast includes Gbenga Akinnagbe, Portia Doubleday, Patrick Fischler and Sierra Capri.
The trailer debuted at CinemaCon in April, giving audiences an early look at Strong’s take on Zuckerberg. Strong’s casting was one of the film’s biggest talking points ahead of release.
A digital release could help the film find a wider audience. MovieWeb has pointed to Sony’s multi-year deal with Netflix as a likely future streaming home in North America, although no streaming date has been announced. For viewers who skipped it in theaters, November 24 offers the next chance to see Sorkin’s take on one of Facebook’s biggest controversies.
