‘The Terminal List’ Isn’t Done Yet: Chris Pratt Returns for ‘Savage Son,’ but Don’t Call It Season 3
Prime Video’s ‘The Terminal List’ franchise is busier than ever, and Chris Pratt’s turn as James Reece keeps paying off for the streamer. All 8 episodes of the show’s second season premiered on October 21, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, which ended a long wait for fans of the military thriller.
The wait really was long. The first season launched in July 2022, and the Hollywood strikes of 2023 stretched the gap between the first 2 installments to 4 years. Prime Video filled that time with ‘The Terminal List: Dark Wolf’, a prequel featuring Taylor Kitsch and Tom Hopper in the lead roles, which grew the story into a full universe.
Now the next chapter is official. Chris Pratt will reprise his role as former Navy SEAL James Reece in ‘Savage Son’, based on Jack Carr’s third novel in ‘The Terminal List’ book series. The twist is that it’s still unclear whether the project counts as a third season of ‘The Terminal List’ or as a spinoff, though Variety‘s sources say a standalone project is more likely than a new season.
Fans of the books already know where Reece is headed. Carr’s ‘Savage Son’ was published on April 14, 2020, and Amazon’s official description promises a darker, more primal story than the TV series has told so far.
The project is described as “a fast-paced military thriller following former Navy SEAL sniper James Reece (Pratt), as he faces his most personal and dangerous mission yet.” It’s billed as “a gripping blend of military action, espionage, and wilderness survival, exploring the thin line between civilization and the savage instincts that emerge when survival becomes personal.”

That wilderness-survival angle would be a real change of pace for the franchise. The second season had Reece uncovering a conspiracy reaching from Moscow to Langley that ties into his family’s history, all while he searches for new purpose after completing his revenge.
The studio is clearly confident in the brand. Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios, praised Carr’s writing in a statement shared with Variety, saying, “Jack Carr’s work has connected with audiences in a way that speaks to the power of his storytelling and the incredible dedication Chris Pratt and the entire team bring to every episode.”
Friedlander added that “‘The Terminal List’ franchise continues to resonate and Savage Son takes the story into its most intense chapter yet.” ‘Savage Son’ is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, MRC, and Civic Center Media, the same partners behind the franchise so far.

For now, a lot of the project is still being worked out. Variety and Deadline both reported that no writer or showrunner is attached yet, so it will likely be a while before cameras roll. Casting beyond Pratt is also uncertain. The novel features some ‘Terminal List’ characters alongside Reece, but it’s not yet clear who, if anyone, from the main show’s cast would join Pratt in the series.
That’s bound to set off speculation about which familiar faces could come back. The timing is notable, too. Season 2, based on the book ‘True Believer’, debuted just 2 weeks before the announcement, and its reception has been mixed. CinemaBlend noted that critics and audiences aren’t on the same page about the new season, but Amazon’s quick greenlight suggests viewers are showing up regardless.

Calling ‘Savage Son’ a standalone project rather than Season 3 might sound like a small branding choice, but it fits how the franchise has grown. With ‘Dark Wolf’ already working as its own series, Prime Video seems to be building ‘The Terminal List’ into a flexible universe instead of a single show running on a fixed season count. For Pratt, it means more time with a character who has become one of his signature TV roles. Fans just have to see what form Reece’s next mission takes.
Would you rather see Savage Son as Season 3 of The Terminal List or a standalone adventure?
