Netflix’s Animated ‘Twilight’ Series ‘Midnight Sun’ Gets a Rare Multi-Season Commitment
The ‘Twilight’ saga isn’t done with us yet. Netflix’s animated ‘Midnight Sun’ series has spent the last couple of years in development, and Edward Cullen fans have been waiting for any sign of progress. The vampire love story went from a bestselling 4-book series to a 5-movie franchise that earned more than $3 billion at the global box office.
The source novel took a long time to arrive. Meyer stopped writing it in 2008 after 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript were released online, and when ‘Midnight Sun’ finally came out in 2020, it sold 1 million copies in its first week. The book retells the events of ‘Twilight’ from vampire Edward Cullen’s point of view, while the main series is told from the perspective of Bella Swan, the human he becomes fascinated with.
Now the series has a vote of confidence. Lionsgate has revealed that the animated adaptation has a 2-season commitment from Netflix, a rare upfront vote of confidence before a single frame has hit the service. During Lionsgate’s earnings call, Lionsgate Television Group chairman Kevin Beggs said: “That’s a 2-season adult animation order at Netflix.”
Beggs explained that the author’s tastes helped shape the project. On the call, he said Meyer is “a huge fan of television, all genres, as we come to get to know her better and animation specifically, which really led directly to the adaptation of Midnight Sun.” Lionsgate also said she is heavily involved as the ‘Twilight’ universe expands.
That should reassure longtime readers. Netflix confirmed that Meyer will serve as an executive producer with her Fickle Fish Films partner Meghan Hibbett, and Sinead Daly (‘Raised by Wolves’) will serve as writer and executive producer.

The series is also reuniting some of the original franchise’s team. It brings back several producers from the ‘Twilight’ movies, including Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett and Emily Wissink. That link to the films could matter, since the book also served as inspiration for Robert Pattinson’s performance in the 2008 ‘Twilight’ film, and this will be the first screen adaptation of ‘Midnight Sun’.
Progress has been slow so far. The adult animated series was first announced in September 2024, and the last update came in July 2026, when a casting call started the search for voice actors. Before that, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns had said the company would be shopping the series around, predicting a lot of interest.
Ordering 2 seasons at once isn’t just a vanity metric. It means production can keep going without a long pause waiting on a renewal decision, which should help shorten the gap between seasons. Long waits between seasons can be a problem for streaming shows.
Beggs made that same point while discussing another Lionsgate series, noting that with so many competitors and so much else out there, viewers can get disconnected and forget about a show. Locking in 2 seasons upfront should help the animated ‘Twilight’ retelling avoid that.

Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere window yet. Based on the current production timeline, Screen Rant estimates the series likely won’t arrive until late 2027 at the earliest, or more likely 2028 or beyond. Animation takes time, especially for a project still casting its voice actors this summer.
The upside is that fans now know this version of the story won’t end after a single season. For a franchise that began in 2008 with Bella Swan and Edward Cullen as star-crossed lovers in Forks, Washington, an animated retelling aimed at adults could bring in longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
