‘VisionQuest’ Showrunner Confirms a Deleted Scene Showed Tommy Removing Paladin’s ‘Bomb’
‘VisionQuest’ is almost over, and fans have been raising questions about loose threads. One of the most talked-about involves Tommy Maximoff and the tracking device stitched into his arm, and showrunner Terry Matalas has now confirmed that its resolution was filmed and then cut.
The series is a superhero science fiction miniseries in Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a sequel to both ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’, developed by Terry Matalas and starring Paul Bettany and James Spader.
The device came from one of the show’s villains. Todd Stashwick’s Paladin is a Boba Fett-style bounty hunter who’s after Vision, and his scenes with Tommy have been some of the season’s tensest.
Even after Tommy cost him his contract by running off with Vision, Paladin bluffed that he had put a bomb in him as insurance when it was really a cheap toy UFO with flashing lights.
That raised an obvious question: what happened to the toy still inside Tommy’s arm? A fan asked Matalas on X whether Thomas had phased the little UFO out of his arm, and the showrunner replied on X with a simple “Yes, deleted scene.” Cosmic Marvel shared the exchange with stills of Ruaridh Mollica’s Tommy and a glowing blue light under a stitched incision on his arm.
The cut scene would have been a big moment for Tommy’s powers. One of the show’s earlier sequences had Tommy accidentally phasing his hand through a vending machine, so using that ability on purpose to remove the fake bomb would have shown him gaining control. It also would have closed Paladin’s cruel bluff on screen.

The scene also adds to how fans view Paladin. Reading between the lines in Episode 6, he doesn’t want to hurt Tommy because he knows exactly how Vision feels seeing his child endangered to get at him. A toy UFO instead of a real explosive fits that more complicated version of the bounty hunter.
Yes, deleted scene.

The character carries a lot of MCU history. Tommy Maximoff is the speedster son of Vision and Wanda Maximoff, whose soul was placed into the teenage body of Thomas Shepherd by his twin brother Billy Maximoff in ‘Agatha All Along’. Mollica plays an older version of Tommy, aka Speed, taking over the role from Jett Klyne of ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

Mollica has said his version leans more toward Thomas Shepherd than Tommy Maximoff. In the show, Paladin captures Thomas Shepherd, a grifter working with pickpocket Lisa Molinari, who claims to be Vision’s son Tommy Maximoff, which sets up the father-son reunion at the center of the series. Matalas had a lot of freedom with the story, though Kevin Feige asked that Vision be reunited with his son Tommy.
Tommy’s moment isn’t the only unused material Matalas has discussed. An unused scene he wrote featured Vision and Ultron in a church, discussing the human soul and its meaning, with Matalas noting that AI reflecting on humanity opens the door to many kinds of stories that the series didn’t get to explore. Fans may hope some of these cut scenes show up in a future home release.

There isn’t much time left in Vision’s story. ‘VisionQuest’ premiered on October 14 and serves as the final chapter in the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’. Episode 7, “Immolation,” arrived on November 3, with the finale, “Forever,” set for November 10.

Matalas has been answering fan questions on social media throughout the season, so more behind-the-scenes details may come out once the finale airs. For now, fans know Tommy got the toy out of his arm, even if they didn’t see it.
Do you think Marvel should have kept the deleted VisionQuest scene showing Tommy removing Paladin's fake bomb?
