Adria Arjona Goes Full Action Hero in A24’s Bloody New ‘Onslaught’ Clip
Adam Wingard has built his career oscillating between massive studio blockbusters and scrappy, visceral genre filmmaking, and his latest project is firmly planting its flag in the latter category. After steering the Monsterverse through ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ Wingard is heading back to the smaller-scale, bloodier storytelling that first put him on the map.
That return takes shape in ‘Onslaught,’ A24’s upcoming action-horror collaboration with Wingard, which the director has described as the closing chapter of an unofficial trilogy alongside his earlier films ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest.’ While not a direct sequel following the same characters, the film shares the same fictional world established in ‘The Guest,’ giving longtime fans of Wingard’s earlier work a connective thread to hold onto.
With the film’s September 4 release drawing closer, A24 has continued rolling out fresh looks at the project, most recently sharing new footage that gives audiences another glimpse into the film’s tone and ensemble cast. The clip continues building anticipation for a movie that’s quickly assembled one of the more eclectic casts of the year.
At the center of ‘Onslaught’ is Adria Arjona, playing Celeste, a hardened Army sniper and single mother living in a trailer park whose life is upended when a trio of genetically engineered super soldiers, codenamed Crybaby, Cockroach, and The Butcher, break loose from a secret military facility. According to A24’s official synopsis, Celeste is forced to “unleash hell” to protect her young daughter once the soldiers begin their rampage.
Dan Stevens plays Dr. Kammler, the mysterious scientist whose experiments are responsible for creating the soldiers in the first place. Stevens previously worked with Wingard on ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ making this their second collaboration together, and his character serves as the hidden hand orchestrating much of the film’s chaos.
Beyond Arjona and Stevens, the film boasts a genuinely eclectic supporting cast. Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn, Reginald VelJohnson, Eric Wareheim, Drew Starkey, and UFC fighter Alex Pereira round out the ensemble, giving the film a mix of established genre veterans and unexpected crossover talent.
That eclectic pairing has already been showcased through a series of retro-style character posters A24 released ahead of the film’s launch, each spotlighting the individual cast members with a throwback visual aesthetic. The studio has also leaned into IMAX-specific marketing, releasing a poster depicting Arjona fully armed against the looming threat of the three super soldiers.
‘Onslaught’ got an early showcase at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where Wingard appeared on a panel alongside Arjona, Stevens, Hall, and Starkey, moderated by Kevin Smith. Attendees at that panel were shown additional footage that A24 held back from wider release until closer to the film’s fall debut.
Reactions from that early screening have been mixed so far, according to reports circulating after the panel. Whether that split response reflects genuine tonal experimentation on Wingard’s part or simply the unpredictability of early buzz remains to be seen once wider audiences get a chance to see the film for themselves.
Written by longtime Wingard collaborator Simon Barrett, with a story credited to both filmmakers, ‘Onslaught’ carries forward the same DNA that made ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest’ cult favorites within genre circles. Closing out that loose trilogy with a bigger, bloodier action-horror hybrid feels like a fitting way for Wingard to bridge his indie roots with the blockbuster sensibilities he’s picked up steering the Monsterverse.
With the film now just weeks away from release, A24 shows no signs of slowing its marketing rollout, continuing to tease new footage and character reveals in the lead-up to its September 4 theatrical debut.
