Adria Arjona’s Gym Sessions Keep Fueling the Same Question: Who Is She Actually Playing in Superman Sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’
Superhero castings rarely stay quiet for long, especially when a franchise as closely watched as James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe is involved. Every casting announcement tends to spark weeks of speculation, and sometimes that speculation lingers for months without a clear resolution.
That has been exactly the case with one of the more mysterious additions to ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ the upcoming sequel to 2025’s ‘Superman.’ Since joining the cast back in April, one actress has kept fans guessing about which character she’s actually preparing to play.
Adria Arjona continues sharing glimpses of her intense gym training for the role, and months after her casting was first confirmed, fans still don’t officially know who she’s playing. The latest round of workout content, again showing her training under celebrity trainer Paolo Mascitti, has reignited the same debate that’s followed her since her casting news first broke.
Arjona’s addition to ‘Man of Tomorrow’ came after a competitive screen-testing process that included Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten. Deadline reported at the time that she had landed the role of Maxima, the alien warrior queen from the planet Almerac who first appeared in “Action Comics” back in 1989 and has been both an antagonist and a potential love interest for Superman throughout her comic history.
Other outlets weren’t so sure that report told the whole story. The Hollywood Reporter noted it remained unclear whether Maxima was actually the character in question, and DC Studios has never officially confirmed any details about the part, leaving her exact role technically unconfirmed to this day.
Complicating matters further is a persistent fan theory that Arjona could actually be stepping into the role of Wonder Woman rather than Maxima. That speculation gained extra fuel after James Gunn previously acknowledged that she would make a great fit for the iconic Amazonian hero, even while addressing unrelated casting rumors involving other actresses testing for the project.
Given how vague official details have remained, fans have continued treating every new piece of content from Arjona as a potential clue. Her physical transformation, in particular, has become a focal point for that ongoing guessing game, with many reading her increasingly intense training as a sign of just how physically demanding her role is shaping up to be.
Whatever character Arjona ends up playing, she’s joining a stacked cast for the sequel. David Corenswet returns as Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor, with the two reportedly forced to team up against a bigger threat: Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi round out the returning ensemble, giving ‘Man of Tomorrow’ one of the more expansive rosters in DC Studios’ new cinematic universe.
Marvel and DC castings typically get confirmed fairly quickly once filming begins, making the lingering ambiguity around Arjona’s role somewhat unusual for a production of this scale. With filming having started back in April and the sequel not due in theaters until July 9, 2027, fans still have a long wait ahead before the mystery is officially put to rest.
Until DC Studios decides to clear things up, Arjona’s gym sessions will likely keep serving as the internet’s primary source of speculation.
