How many Vinland Saga arcs are there?

As you can see, the overall structure of the Vinland Saga manga is quite simple. The story is progressing in a linear fashion most of the time (there are some flashback moments) and so far, with 198 chapters as of the time of writing, there are only four narrative arcs. This is a relatively small number in comparison to the number of chapters since most manga with so many chapters have more arcs, but Yukimura seems to have a different approach, and that works as far as Vinland Saga is concerned.

War Arc

Thorfinn swears revenge on Askeladd after witnessing his father’s murder when he was a child and “joins” Askeladd’s gang with the intention of engaging him in fair combat to the death. However, Askeladd and Thorfinn discover themselves in the middle of a conflict between England and Denmark, with a terrible adversary pursuing them and a prince to defend.

Slave Arc

At Ketil’s Farm, where he was sold into slavery, Thorfinn makes friends with fellow slave Einar. They jointly strive for independence as Thorfinn muses on his history. In the meantime, King Canute starts implementing his plan to create a paradise on Earth and deals with the Crown Curse.

Eastern Expedition Arc

For the first time in years, Thorfinn goes home. He must go east to Greece in order to raise the money necessary to realize his and Einar’s vision of Vinland. He picks up a number of new allies along the way who accompany him on his quest, but Halfdan’s son Sigurd is hot on their heels.
