All About the Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Live-Action Reboot: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and More!
In March 2019, Marvel Studios regained the film rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool after Disney acquired Fox for $71.3 billion.
These characters are set to be incorporated into the MCU. In October 2020, the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ films were labeled as “Marvel Legacy films” on Disney+. Notably, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as an alternate Professor X in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ and Kelsey Grammer returned as Beast in ‘The Marvels.’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ will bring Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, respectively, into the MCU continuity. As time passes, it becomes more evident that we are approaching the reboot. Therefore, we’ve compiled everything we know so far.
The studio is said to be seeking a mix of drama and comedy
Very little is known about the upcoming project’s plot, but the studio has recently ramped up its search for a writer. While some fans have expressed a desire for Beau DeMayo to return as the writer, given the success of ‘X-Men ’97,’ it’s unlikely to happen.
Recent reports indicate that the studio is seeking a person of color to direct it. The movie is said to have a female in focus and will introduce lesser-known characters to the X-Men roster, some of whom have never appeared in live-action before.
However, this scoop lacks specificity. MCU projects typically blend humor and drama, and many recent releases have centered on female characters. This emphasis on female-led projects may feel forced, regardless of one’s open-mindedness and progressiveness. Michael Lesslie is currently in talks to write the movie.
None of the cast has been officially confirmed yet
Despite some reports suggesting that X-Men actors from Fox’s live-action franchise may return, this scenario is highly improbable. The reality is that the project is still in its early stages of development, and there are no credible scoops or rumors confirmed by official sources. Just last week, there was speculation that Keke Palmer had been cast in the MCU for an undisclosed role, with fans hoping she might portray Rogue. However, this remains unconfirmed.
In a recent interview, Iman Vellani expressed her desire to join the X-Men, especially considering her character’s updated origin in the comics. Following the ‘Ms. Marvel’ project, Kamala’s comic book origin was altered, transitioning her from an Inhuman to a mutant after a death and resurrection storyline. With this change, Vellani has shown interest in becoming part of Marvel’s renowned mutant team.
We’ll have to wait quite a while for the movie to arrive
Lastly, let’s consider the release date. With the MCU introducing two new teams, Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts, during phases 5 & 6, the cinematic universe is already quite packed. It’s reasonable to assume that the introduction of the X-Men will likely coincide with the rumored MCU reboot in ‘Secret Wars.’ Recent rumors also support this, suggesting that even though ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will delve into mutants, the full reboot may not happen soon. It’s probable that we’ll have to wait sometime before receiving official announcements or concrete details about the project.
