Carroll described Diggs agreeing almost before she finished explaining the idea. She also said the crew shot the moment several times and ultimately used the first take.

The naming of the twins reflects the same focus on legacy. Carroll said Grandma Mary was always going to be one namesake, and that Corey was the most important person from Spencer’s past for the other.

Carroll had been signaling a satisfying goodbye for months. She told EBONY that the final season was about saying goodbye while launching the characters into the next chapter of their lives. The previous season had ended on a cliffhanger, and the news that this would be the last run came as a surprise to audiences.

In an interview with TV Insider, Carroll said her first calls after learning about the ending included one to Ezra. She wanted to know whether he could return to act in the final run and also direct the last episode. She said he had been there since day one and knows both the original actors and the newer generation.
