If there is one teen-oriented franchise that marked the 2000s, it’s the ‘Spy Kids’ franchise. The movies had everything. The young cast, gadgets, action, and family-friendly themes quickly boosted the movies into stardom. The movie was quite profitable, and an entire franchise of “superheroes were born.’ Today, the ‘Spy Kids’ franchise consists of 5 movies and a single TV series, and today, we’re going to tell you how to watch all these installments in order.

All 5 ‘Spy Kids’ movies in release date order

The first ‘Spy Kids’ movie was released more than 20 years ago, in 2001, and it was both a financial and critical success. Critics loved the new idea, humor, and themes, and over the course of the next ten years, three more installments were released, with an additional installment released only a few months ago. Although they failed to emulate the same success that the first movie had. Let’s see the entire franchise in release date order:

  1. ‘Spy Kids’ (2001)
  2. ‘Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams’ (2002)
  3. ‘Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over’ (2003)
  4. ‘Spy Kids All the Time in the World’ (2011)
  5. ‘Spy Kids: Mission Critical’ (2018) – 2 Seasons
  6. ‘Spy Kids: Armageddon’ (2023)

Are all ‘Spy Kids’ movies & shows connected? What’s the best way to watch them?

All ‘Spy Kids’ movies are generally connected and revolve around brother and sister Carmen and Juni Cortez. The first three movies were directly connected to them, while the fourth and the fifth movies introduced the new Spy Kids. The fourth movie still touched upon Carmen and Juni, despite them still being adults at this point.

The last movie in the franchise, released in 2023, ‘Armageddon’ was supposed to be a reboot of the franchise, and the 2-season animated series released in 2018, despite having Carmen and Juni as the protagonists, is not a direct continuation of the movie, it takes place in a different continuity altogether. The best order to watch the movies is release date order.

All ‘Spy Kids’ movies in chronological order

Only the first four movies in the franchise have a consistent chronological timeline. The other installments are reboots or placed in a different continuity.

1. ‘Spy Kids’ (2001)

The first movie set up the universe and introduced us to Carmen and Juni Cortez, played by Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara, who were, at first glance, regular kids when it comes to pretty much every aspect of their characters. In a twist of fate, Carmen and Juni find out that their parents are actually retired spies, and when they are kidnapped by Fegan Floop (played by Alan Cumming), Carmen and Juni have to pick up their parents’ tools of the trade and figure out how to free them, all the while becoming the next generation of spies.

2. ‘Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams’ (2002)

The second movie in the series takes place shortly after the events of the first and centers on Juni and Carment once again, but they are at this point new recruits of OSS. As they are competing with other recruits in a top-secret mission, they find out about the existence of a powerful and dangerous device called “Transmooker” that has the ability to basically disable all electronic devices. Carmen and Juni are sent to investigate a remote island where the Transmooker is believed to be located. On the island, they encounter strange creatures including miniature dinosaurs by the way.

3. ‘Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over’ (2003)

‘Game Over’ takes place one year after the events of the second movie, and Juni now lives a drastically different life. He is no longer part of the OSS as he decided to retire following the trauma that he lived through in the second installment. He works as a P.I. and barely makes ends meet. Juni plans on having nothing at all with OSS ever again until he is contacted by the organization once again. His sister Carmen, who remained part of the organization, has gone missing while on a mission investigating a strange virtual reality game called ‘Game Over.’

4. ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ (2011)

The fourth movie takes place ten years after the third movie and introduces Marissa Wilson, played by Jessica Alba, a retired spy who is now living a suburban life with her husband Wilbur (Joel McHale) and stepchildren, Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook). Marissa is forced back into action when the villainous Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to accelerate time and bring about the end of the world. To stop him, Marissa needs the help of the next generation of spy kids, including her own stepchildren. Juni and Carmen do appear in the movie but in a lesser role, they are no longer the focus of the series, but the movie still belongs to the same continuity.

5. ‘Spy Kids: Mission Critical’ (2018) – 2 Seasons

‘Mission Critical’ was developed by Netflix, and despite featuring both Carmen and Juni, the series is not set within the same continuity as the original series, and the events are drastically different. The style of the show and the type of humor that the series use is also different, but the narrative pretty much remained the same as each season featured different villains and missions.

Where to watch all above-mentioned movies?

The first three installments in the ‘Spy Kids’ franchise can be streamed on Netflix and Paramount+, while the last three installments, ‘All the Time in The World,’ ‘Mission Critical,’ and ‘Armageddon,’ can only be streamed on Netflix.

Will there be more ‘Spy Kids’ movies?

There will be more ‘Spy Kids’ movies, and Rodriguez plans to create a new trilogy featuring new characters. In September 2023, Robert Rodriguez confirmed that Netflix is planning to produce more ‘Spy Kids movies, and they will, at some point, feature legacy characters as well, but he wants a new cast to be established before doing that.
