All 3 ‘Tarzan’ Movies in Order (Including a TV Series)
Tarzan was a character originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and I’m sure there isn’t a person out there who hasn’t heard about a boy literally raised in a jungle. Even though Tarzan appeared in plenty of movies, both silent era and live-action, what we’re interested in today is Disney’s ‘Tarzan’ franchise, which consists of 3 animated movies and a single TV series. Disney has a tendency to take already existing characters and adapt them in their own special way, giving magical vibes to already existing worlds and adding twists to established stories, so if you’re interested in rewatching Disney’s Tarzan, this watch order might come in handy.
All ‘Tarzan’ movies & series in release date order
The first ‘Tarzan’ movie was released in 1999, and like with most major Disney series, the rest of the installments were released straight to video, despite the successful adaptation of the first movie, which was highly positively reviewed and earned quite a bit of money. In 2001, an animated series was also released. Let’s see the whole franchise in release date order.
- ‘Tarzan’ (1999)
- ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ (2001-2003)
- ‘Tarzan & Jane’ (2002)
- ‘Tarzan II’ (2005)
Are all ‘Tarzan’ movies connected? What’s the best way to watch them?
All Tarzan movies are connected, including a TV series. All movies follow Tarzan and are set within the same continuity without reboots or stuff like that. The best way to watch the movies and TV series is in chronological order, although if you are just watching the movie for the first time, in that case it’s always recommended to watch the installment in release date order.
All ‘Tarzan’ movies in chronological order
The thing with movies featuring Tarzan is that they weren’t exactly released in their proper chronological order. Technically the last movie should be watched before the first movie since it follows Tarzan while he was a young boy, years before he would meet Jane. The movie is supposed to take place during the events of the first movie, but it’s kind of prequelish so it’s best to watch it first. Here’s the full chronological order of Tarzan movies:
- ‘Tarzan II’ (2005)
- ‘Tarzan’ (1999)
- ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ (2001-2003)
- ‘Tarzan & Jane’ (2002)
1.‘Tarzan II’ (2005)

Years before Tarzan meets Jane, he is raised by a family of gorillas in the African jungle and fears a legendary monster, the Zugor, may capture him. Struggling to match the speed of his fellow apes, Tarzan’s attempts to prove himself lead to chaos, causing disappointment among the gorillas and his adoptive father, Kerchak. After an accident leads the apes to believe Tarzan has died, he decides to run away, believing it’s the best outcome for everyone involved.
2. ‘Tarzan’ (1999)

This is the original story of Tarzan, and although it features some flashbacks related to Tarzan’s childhood and development, the majority of the movie takes place in late 1890s or early 1900s after Tarzan has already made contact with humans and met Jane hence why it’s better to watch the movie second.
3. ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ (2001-2003)

‘The Legend of Tarzan’ is a TV series that was supposed to serve as a sequel to the original movie and its complete canon. The series has 30 episodes across 2 seasons. The events of ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ take place immediately following the events of the first movie and follow Tarzan as he tries to adjust to his new role as the leader of the gorillas. He is also married to Jane, and the two live in a treehouse.
4 ‘Tarzan & Jane’ (2002)

‘Tarzan & Jane’ uses three then-unaired episodes of the film’s corresponding television series and combines them into feature-length movies. The events of ‘Tarzan & Jane’ take place one year after the original movie, and it’s told in the form of flashbacks. On Jane and Tarzan’s first wedding anniversary, Jane seeks a suitable present for her husband with the help of Tantor the elephant and Terk the gorilla. They consider throwing a party but recall a past disaster when Jane’s friends mistakenly believed she was held captive. Despite Jane’s efforts to organize a picnic, Tarzan feels embarrassed by his savage habits and refuses to join. The picnic takes a turn when panthers attack, and Tarzan comes to the rescue, ultimately leaving Jane’s friends grateful for the adventure and expressing hopes of returning soon.

When it comes to Disney’s animated Tarzan movies, it’s been close to 2 decades since the franchise released the last installment, and it doesn’t look like a new installment or a reboot is in development.
