The Witch Mountain movie franchise is a well-known sci-fi fantasy series of popular movies aimed at younger audiences. The first movie in the series drew its inspiration from a popular sci-fi novel by Alexander Key. The latter installments likewise were inspired by original characters.
The franchise started back in 1975 and, since then, managed to accrue moderate success. In today’s post, we’ve decided to revisit the franchise and all its movies. Before we start with a more in-depth analysis of the works, let’s see the watch order of Witch Mountain movies.
How many Witch Mountain movies are there?
There are 5 Witch Mountain movies in the franchise so far. The series started with the Escape to the Witch Mountain release in 1975, and so far, the latest installment is Race to the Witch Mountain, released in 2009. The series started with a successful first entry only to end with a less-than-satisfying reboot in 2009, which received a somewhat lukewarm reception for “failing to emulate the magic” of the first installments.
But considering there are five movies in the series in total, let’s start with a brief overview of the whole Witch Mountain franchise.
Witch Mountain movies in order (at a glance)
As we’ve mentioned before, the franchise started in 1975 with the movie Escape to Witch Mountain. It was followed by two sequels, one reboot, and one legacy sequel. The release date order of the Witch Mountain movies is as follows:
- Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)
- Return from Witch Mountain (1978)
- Beyond Witch Mountain (1982)
- Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain (1995)
- Race to Witch Mountain (2009)
Are Witch Mountain movies connected?
Witch Mountain movies are connected. The characters created by Alexander Key heavily inspired all movies. They are set in the same universe, and the events of at least the first three movies are one chronological timeline. The latter movies are likewise connected to the main series, although both tried to “reboot” the universe.
The franchise revolves around alien children stuck on the planet Earth, looking for a way to return to their native planet. They are gifted with supernatural abilities and want to rejoin their extraterrestrial people. The series mixes fantasy and sci-fi elements and is quite popular with children due to its slight action elements.
Do you need to watch Witch Mountain movies in a specific order?
Witch Mountain movies should be watched in a specific order since the first three movies are directly connected and considered sequels. The fourth movie in the series is considered a reboot, and the fifth is a legacy sequel, which means that for the ultimate enjoyment, you should watch the fifth movie last, which coincides with the order of release date.
What is the best way to watch Witch Mountain movies?
The best way to watch the Witch Mountain movie is in the release date order. The chronology of the first three entries in the series is direct, and each subsequent movie is considered a sequel to the previous one. The only movie that doesn’t have its fixed place in the watch order is the fourth installment, Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain, because it is considered a reboot, and it’s not necessary to watch it 4th. Witch Mountain movies in order (by release date)
1. Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)
The first entry in the series was directed by John Hough and focused on Tony and Tia, two children in an orphanage plagued by strange and bizarre psychic abilities ranging from telepathic communication with animals to premonitions. One day Tia warns attorney Lucas Deranian that an accident is about to occur. He is startled by her powers and tells everything about it to his boss, Aristotle Bolt, all about it.
Aristotle is known to obsess over the supernatural. When Lucas tells him that he crossed ways with two uniquely gifted children, Aristotle is ready to do just about anything to get ahold of them. Aristotle manages to gain custody of the children. At first, they are unaware that they are hostages in the house, but soon it becomes crystal clear. Escaping from Aristotle’s home will put them on the path toward discovering their origins, their powers, and their home.
2. Return from Witch Mountain (1978)
Once again, John Hough returns to direct the sequel to the 1975 hit, and we are again following Tia and Tony in a predicament. Tia and Tony return to earth again, this time for a vacation. Their “holiday abroad” is foiled by Letha Wedge (Bette Davis) and Dr. Victor Gannon (Christopher Lee), who are willing to bankrupt themselves to discover the secret of their extraordinary abilities.
3. Beyond Witch Mountain (1982)
Robert Day took on the role of a director for the third installment of the Witch Mountain series. Once again, the movie follows Tia and Tony as they cross paths with Aristotle Bolt, a millionaire looking to abuse their abilities in the first movie. Most roles for the third installment were recast, including the main roles of Tony and Tia.
4. Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain (1995)
The fourth entry into the series is not a direct sequel. It is a remake of the first series. The franchise returns with a brand new cast and brand director at its helm. In the remake, the gifted extraterrestrial twins are called Danny and Anna. They have different origin stories and circumstances under which they discover their true natures.
5. Race to Witch Mountain (2009)
Race to Witch Mountain is a legacy sequel of the original franchise. This time it follows Sara and Seth, passengers on an extraterrestrial ship that crashed near Searchlight, Nevada. The difference in this movie is Sara and Seth are aware from the beginning of what they are, and they join forces with the taxi driver Jack Bruno (Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson) to escape the government agents trying to catch them.
Where to watch Witch Mountain movies?
Escape to Witch Mountain (1975), Return From Witch Mountain(1978), and Race to Witch Mountain can be watched on both Amazon Prime Video and Disney+. Beyond Witch Mountain and Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain are sadly available in DVD form only as no large streaming services offer the movies in their library.
Will there be more Witch Mountain movies?
So far, there are no new Witch Mountain movies planned. However, the series will continue with the upcoming Disney+ show titled “Witch Mountain.” The show will not continue the established timeline; instead, it will re-imagine the original movie released in 1975. The cast, for now, includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Isabel Gravitt, Levi Miller, Bianca “b” Norwood, and Jackson Kelly. The release date is currently unknown.
