Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Will Reportedly Shoot 2 Seasons Back-To-Back and Recast Atreus
Amazon’s live-action ‘God of War’ adaptation has had a turbulent journey. Prime Video handed the project a 2-season order, with the show set to adapt Santa Monica Studio’s Norse saga from 2018’s ‘God of War’ and its 2022 sequel, ‘God of War Ragnarök’.
Filming began in Vancouver in February with Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, Atreus. However, the first official image drew a mixed response online, and things took a bigger turn in late June when Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt, requiring surgery.
Rather than delay production into 2027 while Hurst recovered, Amazon and Sony Pictures Television chose to recast Kratos. Dave Bautista officially stepped into the role, closing his deal on August 20.
The change came with a major cost. Every frame shot with Hurst, including 4 completed episodes, was reportedly scrapped, with production restarting from scratch. Now, a new report suggests the studio is sticking with its original plan. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the series will film Seasons 1 and 2 back-to-back as production resumes.
Richtman also reported that Atreus will be recast for the second season. The role of Thrud, Thor’s daughter, played by Island Austin in Season 1, is reportedly being recast as well. Vinson, who is around 12, is expected to remain Atreus for the first season. An older actor would then take over the role for Season 2.

The report lines up with earlier casting calls. In August, listings sought actors aged 14 to 17 for roles codenamed Joshua and Ruth, which were understood to be Atreus and Thrud. That age range suggests the second season will include a time jump. It would mirror the shift between the 2 games, where Atreus is noticeably older in ‘Ragnarök’.
Amazon has not officially commented on the casting changes. As with all insider reports, the details remain unconfirmed until the studio makes an announcement. Vinson has built an impressive résumé at a young age. He has appeared in ‘Chucky’ and ‘Long Bright River’, and joined the third season of Netflix’s ‘The Night Agent’.
He is also set to play a young Jason Voorhees in Peacock’s ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’. His casting as Atreus was one of the biggest roles of his career so far. Beyond Bautista and Vinson, the series features a strong supporting cast. Teresa Palmer, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor are all on board.
Mandy Patinkin plays Odin, while Alastair Duncan returns to voice Mimir. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka round out the cast as the dwarven blacksmiths Brok and Sindri. The back-to-back schedule means fans could be waiting a while for the series to arrive. Production had originally been expected to run through April 2027, though delays may push that further.

The story follows Kratos and Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. Along the way, they face the gods of the Norse pantheon. The adaptation arrives at a busy time for ‘God of War’.
A new installment, ‘God of War: Laufey’, is set to release next year. With Bautista in the lead and a 2-season plan in place, Amazon is clearly committed to the series. Whether the recasting of Atreus will pay off remains to be seen.
What do you think about Amazon reportedly recasting Atreus for Season 2 of ‘God of War’?
