New 'God of War' Laufey Gameplay Footage Reunites Faye and Kratos

Santa Monica Studio has spent the past few months slowly pulling back the curtain on its boldest experiment yet, and the ‘God of War Laufey‘ hype train just picked up high speed. The game was first revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play on June 2 with a 20-minute gameplay trailer, introducing a brand-new playable character in Laufey. It marked the first time the franchise handed the spotlight to someone other than Kratos in a major way.

The story picks up in an unexpected place. Following Laufey’s death at the beginning of 2018’s ‘God of War’, she wakes up in the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods of all religions. There, she quickly comes face-to-face with Sekhmet from the Egyptian pantheon and Begtse, the Tibetan god of war, who throw her into captivity.

Now, fans have a new look at that adventure. Many outlets shared images from ‘God of War Laufey’ on X, reminding followers that the game releases on February 16, 2027. The headline image is the one getting everyone talking. It shows Faye, with her flowing red hair, standing face-to-face with a bearded Kratos in what appears to be an ornate temple, a fire burning in a stone brazier behind them.

Another shot features a vibrant, colorful creature with a pink flower-like head set against a surreal, sunset-hued sky filled with floating shapes and spears. The sight of the couple together had fans getting emotional fast. One user replied with an image of Kratos, jokingly imagining him telling Faye that he thought she was resting peacefully.

Part of what makes this reunion so intriguing is the game’s unusual timeline. ‘God of War Laufey’ takes place parallel to ‘God of War’ (2018) and ‘God of War Ragnarök’. Considering the world is called the Everywhen, though, it’s hard to say exactly when the game falls on the series’ timeline.

The adventure also leans into the franchise’s quirkier side. Laufey is joined by partners including a talking gelatinous cube and a sword ribbon, a playful contrast to the brooding tone fans associate with Kratos.

The performances look just as promising. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, starring alongside Jack Quaid as Phranque and Perlina Lau as Rue. Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, is Kratos’ deceased wife and Atreus’ mother, and her backstory spans the entire Norse mythology arc.

The release date itself caught many by surprise. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the February launch during its San Diego Comic-Con panel, which also delivered a new teaser. Many fans had expected a later arrival, given the game had only been unveiled a couple of months earlier.

There was an early hint, though. The team had already confirmed a physical disc version, and with Sony halting PlayStation disc production from 2028 onward, ‘God of War Laufey’ will be one of the last PS5 exclusives to get a physical edition.

The panel also brought major news for longtime fans. Cory Barlog confirmed that a second ‘God of War’ game starring Kratos is already in development, and it will tie directly into Laufey’s story. That suggests these new images may be laying groundwork for something much bigger.

February is shaping up to be a crowded month, with the game arriving shortly after ‘Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis’ and just before ‘Persona 4 Revival’, while ‘Fable’ follows a week later. Still, ‘God of War Laufey’ is set to be Sony’s next big PlayStation 5 exclusive after ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’.
