AMC+’s ‘Yaga’ Trailer Turns the Baba Yaga Legend Into a Twisted Small-Town Mystery

Spooky season is bringing plenty of folklore-inspired horror to streaming, and AMC+’s ‘Yaga’ is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing entries. The Canadian series draws from the traditional Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, a forest-dwelling witch who, according to Time Out, can appear either as a ferocious villain who cooks and eats lost travelers or as a kindly old woman who helps the hero.

The show comes from writer and showrunner Kat Sandler, who adapted her own 2019 stage play for television. Reid, notably, took part in workshops of the original play before being cast in the series.

Now fans have their latest look at the eerie series. Bloody Disgusting shared a new 2-minute trailer for ‘Yaga’, confirming the half-hour horror drama premieres October 23 exclusively on AMC+.

The series reimagines Baba Yaga as a contemporary mystery thriller set in a small coastal town. Time Out noted that the footage promises a haunting voice and plenty of disturbing imagery, while keeping the identity of Baba Yaga herself under wraps for now.

The story follows Rapp, played by Noah Reid, a private investigator who arrives in town to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park, a young heir to a powerful fishery played by Hudson Williams, according to AMC. Williams also plays a second character named Logan, TV Insider reported.

Rapp soon clashes with Carson, a wary local detective played by Clark Backo, and Katherine, a charismatic university professor with a taste for younger men played by Carrie-Anne Moss. Along the way, he’s pulled into a web of enigmatic suspects, secret lives, and ancient magic.

Much of the excitement centers on Williams, a breakout star of ‘Heated Rivalry’, since ‘Yaga’ marks his first major project following that hit Crave series, as The Hollywood Reporter noted. Reid is known for ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and AMC’s ‘The Vampire Lestat’, while Moss is best known for ‘The Matrix’ and Backo for ‘Letterkenny’.

The supporting cast includes Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Katharine Isabelle, Hiro Kanagawa, Emilija Baranac, Anisa Harris, and Georgia Acken. The A.V. Club even had some fun with the premise, joking that the series gives audiences a new kind of Baba Yaga to follow the ‘John Wick’ franchise’s spin on the name.

‘Yaga’ is a Crave Original produced by Blink49 Studios and Front Street Pictures in association with Bell Media, according to Deadline. David Frazee and Rachel Talalay co-direct, while Moss also serves as an executive producer alongside Mackenzie Donaldson and Andrew Miller.

AMC Global Media acquired the series exclusively for AMC+ in the United States. Deadline added that early reports from people who saw the stage play suggest the show may mix humor with its darker moments.

The 8-episode first season kicks off Friday, October 23, with 2 episodes, followed by a new episode every Friday leading up to a 2-episode finale on November 27. Before that, the series held its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 17 and will appear at a New York Comic Con panel on October 9.
