An Animated Tinker Bell Series May Have Just Been Quietly Greenlit at Disney

Tinker Bell has spent nearly two decades bouncing between different formats at Disney, from a run of direct-to-video animated films to multiple attempts at a live-action revival that never quite made it off the ground. Despite being one of the studio’s most instantly recognizable characters, finding the right home for her has proven surprisingly difficult.

That search took another notable turn recently, with attention shifting away from live-action entirely and back toward animation instead. Rather than an official studio announcement, though, this latest development has emerged through one of the more reliable behind-the-scenes tracking methods fans have come to rely on.

An animated Tinker Bell series has reportedly received a green light at Disney, titled ‘Tinker Bell & The Glitter City,’ according to Cartoons on the Moon. The report traces back to DTVA News, which noted that SAG-AFTRA’s contract listings recently classified the show under “Year 1,” a designation that typically signals a series has moved beyond the pilot stage into a full production order.

That SAG-AFTRA listing had previously only tracked the project as a pilot, making its shift to a Year 1 classification a meaningful signal, even though Disney itself has not issued any official confirmation. The same reporting noted that another Disney Television Animation project, ‘Fuzz,’ received a similar Year 1 listing earlier in August, suggesting a pattern of greenlights being tracked this way before studios make anything public.

‘Tinker Bell & The Glitter City’ would mark a return to animation for the character following six DisneyToon Studios films released between 2008 and 2014, which starred Mae Whitman as the voice of Tinker Bell alongside Lucy Liu, Raven-Symoné, and Pamela Adlon. Those films followed Tinker Bell’s early adventures in Pixie Hollow long before her more famous appearances alongside Peter Pan.

This animated approach comes as Disney has also been separately developing an entirely different Tinker Bell project in live action for Disney+. That series, reportedly considered a “high priority” for the streamer, is being written by Liz Heldens and Bridget Carpenter, the duo behind ‘Friday Night Lights,’ though no cast or release date has been announced for that version either.

The character’s live-action journey has been particularly rocky over the years, with previous attempts featuring Reese Witherspoon in 2015 and Elizabeth Banks in 2010 both falling apart before production ever got underway. Having two separate Tinker Bell projects moving forward simultaneously, one animated and one live action, would represent a notably aggressive push from Disney to finally find lasting success with the character across multiple formats.

For now, ‘Tinker Bell & The Glitter City’ remains unconfirmed by Disney itself, with only the SAG-AFTRA paperwork trail offering evidence that the project has moved forward. Given how often these kinds of union filings have accurately predicted official greenlights in the past, though, fans have plenty of reason to take the report seriously.
