Andrew Garfield Finally Puts Speculation To Rest Over His ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Involvement
Few rumors in the Marvel fandom have proven quite as persistent as speculation surrounding a certain multiverse-traveling Spider-Man’s next appearance. Ever since ‘No Way Home’ reintroduced audiences to alternate versions of Peter Parker, fans have been convinced another crossover event was inevitable.
That speculation has only intensified as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ inches closer to release, with rumors and leaks continuing to circulate about which surprise cameos might show up in Marvel’s next massive ensemble film. Naturally, all eyes have remained fixed on whether the alternate Spider-Men from ‘No Way Home’ would make a comeback.
Andrew Garfield has now addressed that speculation directly, stating he will not be returning as Spider-Man in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Speaking at the premiere of his historical action drama ‘The Uprising’ at the DGA in West Hollywood, Garfield was asked point-blank about his involvement in the film, and while his denial was firm, he left just enough ambiguity to keep fans guessing. He said fans would find out one way or another, according to Variety.
That kind of playful uncertainty has become something of a signature move for Garfield whenever the topic comes up, and it’s unlikely to fully quiet the rumors swirling around his potential return. Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the complete cast list for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ leaving plenty of room for fan theories to keep circulating right up until release.
Garfield’s latest comments follow a long pattern of denying Spider-Man rumors, only for those denials to later prove misleading. He spent much of 2021 publicly insisting he wouldn’t appear in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ before ultimately showing up alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in a reveal that helped push the film past $1.9 billion at the global box office.
That history has made fans understandably skeptical of any denial he offers regarding future Marvel appearances. In a separate GQ video interview, Garfield was asked directly whether he and Maguire would appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ responding bluntly with an emphatic no. Yet when MTV’s Josh Horowitz pressed him further on a potential appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ Garfield offered a far more evasive response, laughing while suggesting fans would simply have to wait and see.
Garfield has previously expressed openness to reprising the role under the right circumstances. Speaking at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, he explained that he’d love to play the character again in some capacity, but stressed that any return would need to feel genuinely unique, offbeat and surprising rather than a simple repeat of what audiences have already seen.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is currently set for a December 18 release, following a previous scheduling shift that pushed it back from its original spring date. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is slated to follow roughly a year later, on December 17, 2027, closing out the current chapter of Marvel’s ongoing Multiverse Saga.
Given Garfield’s track record of denials that didn’t ultimately hold up, fans have plenty of reason to remain skeptical of his latest comments regarding ‘Doomsday.’ Whether his Spider-Man ultimately sits this one out or resurfaces once again for ‘Secret Wars’ remains firmly in the realm of speculation until Marvel Studios says otherwise.
