Andrew Garfield Has Seemingly Started Lying Again About His Potential Role in ‘Spider-Man 4’: “You might have been duped”

Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). While the franchise didn’t achieve massive popularity during his tenure, his portrayal was well-received, leading to excitement among fans when he appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.

One notable aspect of the No Way Home marketing campaign was Garfield’s repeated denial of his involvement in the film, a claim he maintained for two years.

Andrew Garfield initially denied his participation in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which fueled significant speculation and excitement among fans. After the film’s release and once he was free to discuss it, Garfield admitted that he actually enjoyed keeping the secret and misleading people and the internet for two years.

I lied to people for a good two years. I lied to the internet for two years and it felt great. It was fun to keep it secret. You know when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone and they’re like ‘I hate surprises, is the party happening.’ […] It felt like organizing a surprise party for a bunch of people.

With Spider-Man 4 in development, there are numerous rumors suggesting that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will reprise their roles in the upcoming film. Given that the movie will continue exploring multiversal themes from the previous installment and the current popularity of legacy characters in the MCU, it’s plausible that the studio might repeat the successful formula from before.

Indiewire recently asked Garfield about Spider-Man 4, and he found himself in a “boy who cried wolf” situation. Garfield denied any involvement, claiming that fans have been misled by online speculation.

“The internet is a big place. I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid”

Garfield’s comments might theoretically make sense, but given his previous denials, his credibility is now in question. At this point, few people are taking his statements seriously.
