Andrew Garfield Reveals Why He Hasn’t Congratulated Tom Holland Yet on His Record-Breaking Summer

Hollywood’s Spider-Man legacy has always come with a strange kind of camaraderie between the actors who’ve worn the mask. Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland shared the screen together in ‘No Way Home,’ forging a connection that fans have watched play out in interviews and public appearances ever since.

That connection has made every subsequent milestone in each actor’s career feel like something the others might weigh in on, especially when one of them is having the kind of summer Holland just had. Between two massive box office hits and a wave of critical praise, it would be easy to assume every corner of Hollywood has already reached out with congratulations.

Garfield, however, is holding off. He revealed that he will reach out to Holland once he’s actually seen ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey,’ explaining that he hasn’t managed to watch either film yet and doesn’t want to be disingenuous by celebrating work he hasn’t personally experienced. Garfield made the comments at the premiere of his historical action drama ‘The Uprising’ at the DGA in West Hollywood, according to Variety.

Despite not having seen either film, Garfield made clear he still respects what Holland has accomplished this year. He acknowledged that a movie making money and drawing audiences to theaters is an incredible thing on its own, even before factoring in the specifics of the performances themselves.

Holland’s 2026 has been defined by two massive releases: Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ in which he stars alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ his fourth outing as Peter Parker under director Destin Daniel Cretton. Both films have generated significant box office and critical attention throughout the summer, keeping Holland’s name consistently in the headlines.

Garfield, meanwhile, was busy premiering his own major project the same week. In Paul Greengrass’s ‘The Uprising,’ he plays a fictional leader who rises up during a rebellion of commoners against King Richard II in 1381, a role that reportedly required extensive stunt work on Garfield’s part. Speaking about the physical demands of the shoot, Garfield noted that he insisted on doing most of his own stunts for the film’s fight scenes, joking that it meant plenty of ice packs on his knees given that he’s not as young as he used to be.

Beyond his comments about Holland’s recent films, Garfield also used the opportunity to address ongoing speculation about his potential involvement in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Following his surprise cameo in ‘No Way Home,’ fans have continued to wonder whether he might return to the Spider-Man role in some capacity within the wider Marvel universe, particularly as that next Avengers installment approaches.

For now, though, Garfield’s focus remains on his own upcoming slate rather than any potential MCU return. Beyond ‘The Uprising,’ he has several other high-profile projects on the way, including the fantasy adventure ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ and ‘Artificial,’ in which he’s set to portray OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

‘The Uprising’ tells the story of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in England, with Garfield leading an ensemble cast that includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie and Katherine Waterston. The film is set to hit U.S. theaters on September 11, giving Garfield his own moment in the spotlight even as conversation continues to swirl around his former Spider-Man co-star’s record-breaking summer.

Whether or not Garfield eventually sends that message to Holland, his comments suggest a genuine respect for the work itself rather than empty industry praise. For fans who’ve followed the multiverse of Spider-Men since ‘No Way Home,’ it’s a small but telling detail about how these actors continue to support one another, even from a distance.
