Andy Muschietti Talks ‘Batman: Brave & the Bold’—Delays & Plans for a Smaller Film First

After James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav emphasized a clear direction for the new DC Universe (DCU), stating, “There’s not going to be four Batmans.” A month later, Gunn and Safran revealed their initial plan for the DCU, which included a movie titled ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ This film will introduce the DCU’s official version of Batman and is inspired by Grant Morrison’s celebrated comic book run from 2006 to 2013.

Ben Affleck, who played Batman in the DCEU, will not return for this version. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’s interpretation of Batman, as seen in ‘The Batman,’ will remain separate from the DCU and continue under the “DC Elseworlds” banner, a label for projects set outside the main DCU continuity.

In June 2023, Andy Muschietti, known for directing ‘The Flash,’ was announced as the director of ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ His sister, Barbara Muschietti, will co-produce the movie alongside Gunn and Safran. This announcement marked another significant step in shaping the new vision for the DCU.

Since the original announcement, we know nothing about the upcoming movie except that Batman will be older than Superman in the DCU. Gunn was also often criticized for delaying the Batman movie for so long in the newly established universe.

Now, more than a year after the original announcement Muschietti commented on the upcoming movie during his California Secreta Podcast, and it’s not good.

Andy Muschietti revealed that the ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ will not be happening anytime soon. He mentioned that before work on the Batman project begins, he might direct a smaller film.

“I’m now writing a science fiction movie that I would like to do… Batman is a project that’s been postponed a bit. So there could be another film before it, possibly that one.”

These are certainly not good news, at least not if you were looking forward to the Batman movie within the first few years.

‘The Brave and the Bold’ will focus on members of the “Bat-Family,” a group of heroes connected to Batman, and will introduce Damian Wayne, Batman’s son, as a new version of Robin.

According to James Gunn, the story will center on the unusual and complicated relationship between Batman and Damian, describing it as a “strange father-and-son story.” This dynamic promises to add a fresh emotional layer to the film, showcasing how a seasoned hero like Batman navigates being a father to a rebellious and highly skilled young vigilante.
