A new chapter in the Lord of the Rings saga is coming, with The Hunt for Gollum set to explore the iconic character’s story. Andy Serkis, who will reprise his role as Gollum and direct the film, shared details in a Collider interview, calling it a “sizable movie” that will dive deep into Gollum’s journey. Filming is slated to begin in early to mid-2026, with a release planned for December 17, 2027.

Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the film follows Gollum’s perspective as key figures like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Sauron pursue him. Serkis expressed excitement about returning to New Zealand, saying, “I’m incredibly excited to go back and work with my friends and family in New Zealand and actually do something which is, I think, going to be surprising, and yet very much part of the lore and the feel of the trilogy.”

He added, “The sensibility of it will feel, I think, close to that, and yet we’re investigating in greater depth the character formerly known as Smeagol, but mostly known as Gollum.”

Produced by Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema, the project brings back Lord of the Rings veterans Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens as producers, with Boyens writing the script. The film, initially eyed for 2026, was delayed to 2027 to allow more development time. It’s one of two new Lord of the Rings projects in the works.

The cast may feature familiar faces, including Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Sean Bean as Boromir, with rumors of John Rhys-Davies returning as Gimli.

Other stars like Scarlett Johansson, Martin Freeman, Elijah Wood, and Cate Blanchett are also expected to appear. McKellen confirmed in September 2024 that he was approached to reprise Gandalf for this film and other Middle-earth projects. Bloom discussed using AI to de-age Legolas, while Boyens revealed talks with Mortensen, though his role remains unconfirmed.

The concept emerged after 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, with Warner Bros. aiming to refresh Middle-earth by centering on Gollum. Serkis was tapped to direct in late 2023, bringing his vision to a story that promises to blend nostalgia with a fresh exploration of a fan-favorite character.

Focusing on such a complex character is risky but exciting, and the potential return of iconic cast members adds to the hype. I hope it captures the trilogy’s heart while offering something new.
