Angela Bassett Keeps Hope Alive for Queen Ramonda’s Return in ‘Black Panther 3′

Few performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have left a mark quite like Angela Bassett’s Queen Ramonda. Her turn in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘ earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, which NPR noted made her the first actor from any Marvel movie to be recognized in an acting category.

That performance came with heartbreak. Ramonda carried Wakanda through the loss of her son, T’Challa, before her own death in the sequel fueled the war with Namor, as ComicBook.com recalled. For many fans, it seemed like a definitive farewell to one of the franchise’s most commanding characters.

Now Bassett is hinting that Ramonda’s story may not be completely finished. During an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ on September 23, she was asked whether the queen could return in the next ‘Black Panther’ film.

Bassett didn’t confirm anything, but she didn’t close the door either. She told the hosts there’s always a chance and always hope, describing hope as the expectation of something good. Her comments quickly spread online. One fan simply responded that it was good news, reflecting how much audiences would love to see her back in Wakanda.

Bringing back a character who died on screen might sound complicated, but ‘Black Panther’ has a built-in solution. One outlet pointed to the Ancestral Plane, a spiritual realm accessible to those who consume the heart-shaped herb, allowing living characters to commune with those who have died. The franchise has already used this device twice. T’Challa visited his late father, T’Chaka, in the original film, and Shuri spoke with Killmonger in the same space during ‘Wakanda Forever’.

ComicBook.com suggested the most likely scenario would involve David Jonsson’s grown-up T’Challa II visiting his grandmother. The outlet noted the 2 characters have never met on screen, which could make such a scene especially emotional.

Bassett’s comments come right on the heels of another big moment. Earlier this week, she offered her public blessing to Jonsson taking on the role of T’Challa’s grown son, telling reporters she was thrilled about the casting news.

Jonsson was revealed as the adult Prince T’Challa II at San Diego Comic-Con, with ‘Black Panther 3’ set for December 15, 2028. Between her endorsement of the new lead and her openness to a potential return, Bassett clearly remains deeply invested in Wakanda’s future.

Bassett has spoken warmly about the franchise for years. In a 2023 interview with Deadline, she described returning for ‘Wakanda Forever’ as carrying on the journey of ‘Black Panther’ with a cast that felt like family.

She also reflected on how the sequel moved forward after the loss of Chadwick Boseman, pointing to Shuri coming into her own and the introduction of T’Challa’s son as signs of hope. Fittingly, that same spirit of hope is exactly what she’s holding onto now.

For now, Marvel has not announced whether Ramonda will appear in ‘Black Panther 3’, and production details remain scarce. Still, with the Ancestral Plane available and a new generation stepping into the spotlight, a brief return for the beloved queen feels more possible than ever.
