‘Anna Pigeon’ has been renewed for a second season at USA Network, with the announcement coming on Wednesday, October 7, two days before the first season finale. Tracy Spiridakos stars in the lead role, with Lea Thompson directing and Morwyn Brebner serving as showrunner.

The decision gives the network a freshman drama it can build around. The renewal arrived ahead of the season finale, which was set to air Friday, October 9, at 10/9c on USA Network. Here is what is confirmed about the second season of ‘Anna Pigeon’ so far.

Why USA Network Moved Quickly on the ‘Anna Pigeon’ Renewal

The viewership figures help explain the early pickup. ‘Anna Pigeon’ became USA Network’s highest rated original scripted series premiere in nearly eight years, averaging 2.35 million total viewers in the seven days after it debuted.

The audience held up beyond opening night. The network says the show has reached 18 million total viewers across its first season. USA also describes the series as the top new scripted drama on ad supported cable.

Michael Sluchan, a senior vice president at Versant, said the show had connected with audiences and brought a compelling new heroine and a fresh perspective to the network. Brebner added that the team cannot wait to get back outside for the new batch of episodes.

The context matters too. ‘Anna Pigeon’ is one of only two scripted series currently airing on USA Network, alongside ‘The Rainmaker.’ Critical reception has been more measured, as TVLine, which reported the renewal, gave the series a C grade ahead of its premiere. The TVLine review suggested the show could use more local quirk, which makes the strong audience response all the more notable.

What the Second Season Premiere Date Situation Looks Like

Viewers hoping for a date will have to wait. USA Network has not announced a premiere date, an episode count or any story details for the second season. The network has yet to name a release window for the next season.

What the network has offered is a broad promise. The second season is said to bring continued mystery and adventure as Anna’s story unfolds. Beyond that description, the direction of the new episodes remains unspoken.

The first season gives a sense of the show’s rhythm. The series premiered on August 7 and ran for ten episodes. Episodes are set to be available on USANetwork.com and Fandango following the finale, which gives newcomers time to catch up.

The ‘Anna Pigeon’ Cast and Who Could Return

Spiridakos, a veteran of ‘Chicago P.D.,’ plays the title character. The first season cast also includes Paulina Alexis, Ronnie Rowe, Tricia Helfer, Kim Coates, Crystle Lightning, Cooper Levy, Manuel Rodriguez Saenz, Ryan Northcott, Nikki Rae Hallow, Jordan Sledz and Melanie Scrofano.

No returning cast list has been released. USA has not detailed which supporting cast members will be back. Helfer plays Anna’s therapist sister, while Rowe plays FBI agent Frederick Stanton, a friend and potential love interest.

One casting hope has already been voiced. In an interview with Hello Magazine, Thompson said she would love to see her daughter Maddie back on screen for the second season, and that there are many exciting places for Anna to go.

Thompson’s involvement runs deep. She is an executive producer and directed several first season episodes. That continuity suggests the creative voice behind the show is staying in place.

Nevada Barr’s Novels and the Story Ahead

The series has a long literary history behind it. It is based on Nevada Barr’s novels, which began publishing in 1993. The books are New York Times best sellers.

Whether the show follows the books in order is still unclear. It has not been confirmed whether the second season will adapt A Superior Death, the second novel in Barr’s series. Each episode of the first season centered on a new crime inside the park.

The personal thread is just as important. Anna is a theater stage manager turned park ranger who left New York City after her husband was murdered in a home invasion. The mystery around his death unfolds slowly across the first season through phone calls with her sister and nightmare flashbacks.

The series is produced by Cineflix and SEVEN24 Films for USA Network in association with Bell Media. With the next chapter of ‘Anna Pigeon’ confirmed but still unscheduled, readers who have followed Anna’s search for answers about her husband are welcome to share in the comments which unresolved thread they most want the second season to pick up first.
