Anne Hathaway Is Hollywood’s Box Office Queen as ‘Verity’ Rules the Weekend

Few stars have had a year quite like Anne Hathaway. After sitting out 2025 entirely, the Oscar winner returned in 2026 with an astonishing 5 movies: ‘Mother Mary’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, ‘The Odyssey’, ‘The End of Oak Street’ and ‘Verity’.

Her slate has covered a remarkable range, spanning a psychological drama, a sequel, an epic and a thriller. Gold Derby reports that her first 4 releases of the year have combined to gross more than $2.5 billion worldwide.

Now Hathaway has added another milestone to her banner year. With ‘Verity’ opening to $32.6 million and taking the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend, she has now led 3 No. 1 films as a leading actress this year, following ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘The Odyssey’.

The Colleen Hoover adaptation, directed by Michael Showalter, stars Hathaway alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, with Hathaway also credited as a producer. The film cost a reported $40 million, and its global haul already stands at more than $60 million.

Its success came despite lukewarm reviews. ‘Verity’ sits at 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Collider’s Carly Lane argued the film “isn’t nearly as creepy, campy, or sexy as it could have — and should have — been,” in her review for Collider.

Audiences didn’t seem to mind. The thriller also comfortably beat Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’, which stumbled to an $8 million opening in fifth place. Hathaway’s hot streak started with a fan-favorite sequel. ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, which premiered in New York on April 20, saw her return as Andy Sachs alongside Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

The sequel overperformed in a big way. It grossed $693.2 million worldwide on a $100 million production budget, becoming the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2026. Then came Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which has grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide and become the director’s highest-grossing movie of all time.

Hathaway currently leads Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the epic. Hathaway’s year wasn’t without a stumble, though. A24’s ‘Mother Mary’, in which she plays a pop star whose reunion with her former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel, forces her to confront her past, grossed just $3 million against a $20 million budget.

She has openly acknowledged that one of her films didn’t land. Hathaway was asked about her bumper year while promoting ‘The End of Oak Street’, her film with Ewan McGregor. The actress shows no sign of slowing down. She is set to reunite with Tom Cruise in ‘Days of Thunder 2’, making this weekend’s box office face-off an amusing preview of their next collaboration.

For now, Hathaway can celebrate a year that few actors ever achieve. Between blockbuster sequels, an Oscar-buzzy epic, and a surprise thriller hit, she has firmly cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
