Sam Wilson’s journey to becoming Captain America has been one of the MCU’s most closely watched arcs. After taking up the shield, Anthony Mackie’s hero led his first solo outing in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which ended with a promise that the Avengers would be coming back.

In that film’s final scene, Sam told Joaquin Torres, who was recovering in the hospital, that he planned to reform the team. The post-credits scene raised the stakes even further, as the imprisoned Samuel Sterns warned that something big was coming and that “The Others” were on their way.

Now Mackie has revealed exactly how those threads connect to the next Avengers film. Speaking to SYFY WIRE while promoting the Audible audio drama ‘Exoplanet’, the actor explained that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ takes place just a few months after the events of ‘Brave New World’.

“Basically, you find Cap coming off the heels of Captain America: Brave New World,” Mackie told SYFY WIRE, adding that the story picks up literally months after the previous film.

According to Mackie, Sam is fully committed to his mission of bringing the Avengers back together. He described the new Captain America as determined to reunite the team to face the doom heading their way.

That threat comes in the form of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Sam will team up with heroes from across the multiverse to stand against the villain, and Mackie admitted he has always wanted to fight Downey on screen.

The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who return to the franchise after their earlier Avengers films. Joe Russo said at SXSW London in June that the team was “starting over from scratch” with this new chapter.

Mackie’s comments help connect the dots between Sam’s solo film and the much larger crossover. ‘Brave New World’ set up Sam’s leadership role, and ‘Doomsday’ appears ready to test it in a big way.

Getting the team back together may not be easy. Fans can expect some friction between Sam and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, tied to the Thunderbolts’ rebrand as the New Avengers.

Chris Evans is also back as Steve Rogers, a return that could add more emotion to Sam’s role as Cap. Seeing the original Captain America alongside his successor is sure to be one of the film’s biggest talking points. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, and X-Men veterans Ian McKellen and the late Patrick Stewart, making the reunion even bigger.

The timeline also makes sense of Sterns’ warning in ‘Brave New World’. His mention of “The Others” was widely read as a hint about threats from other universes, a theme ‘Doomsday’ seems set to explore.

With heroes from different worlds joining forces against Doom, Sam’s push to rebuild the Avengers may arrive just in time. His leadership could prove crucial as the stakes grow far beyond anything the team has faced before.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18 and leads directly into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, set for December 17, 2027. Together, the 2 films are expected to reshape the MCU.

For Mackie, the film is a chance to show Sam stepping fully into his role as the leader of Earth’s mightiest heroes. If his comments are any sign, fans will find a more confident Captain America ready to unite a fractured team.
