‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Poster Detail Has Fans Convinced Scarlet Witch Is Hiding Behind Doom’s Masks
Marvel Studios has spent months guarding the secrets of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ like a vault. Its marketing has been unusually focused on one man, and that man is Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Every new piece of artwork gets picked apart frame by frame.
The most intriguing background players so far are three masked figures nobody can name. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, the studio displayed costumes for three mysterious Latverian Witches in green, yellow and purple. Nobody knows who is wearing them.
That mystery is the backdrop for a post from Marvel Mania on X, which has pulled in 721.4K views, 17K likes and 1.1K reposts. The account pointed to the poster featuring the Latverian Witches and argued it “seemingly confirms” that Wanda Maximoff is among them. Its evidence is the hand of the red-robed witch at the center, which it shows beside an image of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch conjuring red energy.
The artwork itself has been around for a few weeks. Marvel unveiled it at Comic-Con Málaga on Oct. 3, placing Doctor Doom in front of three masked figures. It shows Doom descending the steps of his throne room while the witches stand behind him beneath a glowing green stained-glass window, with the tagline “12.18.26 IS DOOMSDAY” running along the bottom.
The biggest talking point is the color change. Fans quickly noticed that one of the witches is now wearing red instead of yellow. That has fueled speculation that the trio could be Clea in purple, Wanda in red and Sylvie in green, matching the colors of their magic.
The red robe matters because it fills a gap fans had already spotted. Based on the magic colors established in ‘Agatha All Along,’ the earlier coven lacked Wanda’s scarlet chaos. A red-clad witch front and center looks to many like Marvel closing that loop on purpose.
There is also a long history behind the theory. Fans haven’t seen Wanda alive since ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ in 2022, so a return has been widely expected. The Latverian Witch costume display has been read as a hint that Marvel may adapt the comic storyline ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade’.
In that comic arc, an amnesiac Wanda is controlled by Doom, who plans to steal and unleash her powers to reshape the world in his image. The theory is that Wanda could be disguised and serving Doom. That would give Downey’s villain a very personal weapon against the Avengers.
Still, nothing here is confirmed. The poster gives the three figures different-colored robes, but Marvel has not linked any color to a named character. The only confirmed point is that the film will include the Latverian Witches, and the theories about who they are should be treated as just that.
Other possibilities keep the debate alive. Separate fan theories have floated Doctor Strange, Wanda, Clea and Sylvie as candidates for the masked roles, while another rumor named variants of Wanda Maximoff, Maria Rambeau and Peggy Carter. The poster hasn’t settled any of it.
That uncertainty is probably the point of the whole campaign. A pinched-finger gesture can be read as spellcasting, or as a pose that means nothing at all, and Marvel has little reason to say which. Fans will keep rewatching every frame of the marketing until then.
The wait is almost over. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is slated to open in theaters on Dec. 18. If Wanda really is under one of those masks, the reveal will land in the middle of the biggest Marvel showdown in years.
