‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors Discuss Iron Man’s MCU Comeback: “We Closed That Book”
‘Avengers: Endgame’ hit screens five years ago, marking the MCU’s biggest moment yet, leaving fans both thrilled and heartbroken as Iron Man sacrificed himself to vanquish Thanos.
Since his demise, fans have clung to the hope that he might return, especially with the Multiverse Saga unfolding. However, Feige has repeatedly stated that Iron Man won’t be making a comeback, as it would diminish the emotional impact of ‘Endgame.’
Robert Downey Jr. recently discussed the possibility of coming back to the MCU, expressing his willingness as the role is deeply ingrained in him. This stirred a mix of confusion and hope among fans, especially since many believe Iron Man could help steer the MCU’s current direction. Additionally, an Easter egg in the latest ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ trailer hinted at the character’s potential return.
In an interview with GamesRadar, the Russo brothers, directors of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ shared their thoughts on the potential comeback, and they’re skeptical. They don’t see how it could happen, considering they felt they wrapped up Iron Man’s story conclusively.
I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the road to that would be [laughs].
Joe Russo added that the moment is pretty much a “closed book.”
I mean we closed that book so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.
There’s a straightforward way to bring Iron Man back from the dead in the MCU: they could introduce a “variant” or utilize time-traveling tricks. We’re knee-deep in the ‘Multiverse Saga,’ where variants and time travel are significant storytelling elements.
Look at Loki, for example. His death seemed final and was quite emotional. Yet, he returned as a younger variant through time travel and starred in two seasons of his own show. This move didn’t diminish the emotional weight of his death; in fact, it enhanced his character arc, especially in the finale of season 2. All it takes is raising the stakes a bit, similar to what they did with Loki.
