‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Hides Brand-New Scenes That Set the Stage for ‘Doomsday’

Marvel’s return to its biggest blockbuster was always meant to be more than a nostalgia trip, and ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ is proving exactly that. The re-release opens September 25, with early screenings already underway, and serves as a bridge to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives on December 18 with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Fans had been promised extra footage, a new post-credits scene, and an extended runtime, but few knew just how much the new material would reshape the ending of the 2019 film. Be warned: spoilers for the Encore’s new footage lie ahead.

According to Variety, the re-release adds 4 new scenes and roughly 4 minutes of footage that tie directly into ‘Doomsday’, featuring Downey’s Doctor Doom, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner.

The first change arrives at the very end of the story. ComicBookMovie reported that when the older Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter share their kiss, they’re interrupted by a knock at the door, and Steve hides while Peggy answers, setting up a surprise reunion with Loki. Cosmic Book News noted that this visit takes place before Loki’s ‘Loki’ Season 2 finale, when he took on the job of holding the multiverse together.

Another scene takes viewers inside the Time Variance Authority, where Mobius, Casey, Ouroboros, and Miss Minutes spot 2 Earths about to collide in an incursion. The Tab identified them as Earth-10005 and Earth-1127, with the worlds firing missiles at each other before the collision.

Things escalate quickly. More alternate worlds start colliding until Ouroboros announces that the multiverse is collapsing, while monitors show realities already destroyed, including the universe tied to the Eric Bana Hulk film and the home reality of Captain Carter from ‘What If…?’.

Variety raised the possibility that the colliding Earths could be Fox’s ‘X-Men’ universe and the main MCU world. That would set up the clash between the Avengers and mutants like Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Gambit that was teased in the ‘Doomsday’ trailer.

A mid-credits scene checks in on Bruce Banner after the events of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, where he was taken to a secure medical facility after losing control under Jean Grey’s influence. In the Encore, he’s working in an underground bunker on a serum to suppress his transformations.

Then Doom arrives. The Tab reports that Doom’s voice announces he has come to collect Banner, who struggles as he turns into the Hulk before the camera falls and only green light remains. FandomWire speculated that if Hulk ends up on Doom’s side, even temporarily, the Avengers could be facing one of their strongest former allies.

The final surprise comes at the very end of the credits. Doom is shown hammering his metal mask into shape by hand, a callback to Tony Stark building his first suit in a cave in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’.

The original ‘Endgame’ ended its credits with only the sound of that hammering. FandomWire pointed out that Marvel has now given the sound a brand-new meaning, and since Downey played both Tony and Doom, the moment feels like a deliberate mirror between the hero who once saved the universe and its biggest new threat.

With the multiverse in freefall, Hulk seemingly in Doom’s grasp, and Steve’s quiet retirement disrupted, the Encore has laid down a lot of groundwork in just a few minutes. Wikipedia notes that ‘Doomsday’ will see the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men converge from different universes to face Doom.
