‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is Returning to Theaters With New Footage, and It’s Longer Than You Remember
Marvel Studios has spent years building toward the next chapter of its Multiverse Saga, but before audiences get there, the studio is taking a deliberate detour back to where it all last converged. Bringing back one of the franchise’s most beloved entries for a limited theatrical run is a bold move this deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timeline.
That detour arrives at a particularly strategic moment. ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ is slated to return to theaters on September 25, sitting neatly in the release window between ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and the long-awaited ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ positioning the re-release as a bridge connecting Marvel’s past and its immediate future.
According to Fandango’s official listing, this new version of the film, titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ runs three hours and five minutes, making it roughly four minutes longer than the original 2019 theatrical cut. That extra runtime isn’t just padding either, with reports suggesting the added material plays a direct role in setting up what comes next in the franchise.
Marvel confirmed the re-release during its San Diego Comic-Con 2026 presentation, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo clarifying that Encore would not simply be a straight replay of the original film. Reports following that announcement suggested the new cut would include a new introduction, additional bonus scenes woven directly into the body of the film, and a fresh ending sequence.
Joe Russo elaborated on the reasoning behind the re-release while speaking at the Sands Film Festival earlier this year, describing it as a “critical companion story.” He called it “a setup for what you’re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers: Doomsday,” making clear that Encore is meant to function as more than just a nostalgia play for longtime fans.
Encore also carries some added technical significance for Disney’s evolving theatrical strategy. The re-release is set to become the first film shown under the studio’s new Infinity Vision certification, a premium large-format branding designed to highlight theaters offering the biggest and most immersive viewing experience available.
Reports indicate the new Endgame footage will only be available in Infinity Vision-certified auditoriums and IMAX screens, giving theater chains an added incentive to promote the format ahead of Doomsday’s own December release. That exclusivity also mirrors the kind of premium rollout strategy Marvel has increasingly leaned on for its biggest tentpole releases.
The timing of Encore’s release, just months before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters, strongly suggests Marvel wants audiences walking into the next Avengers film with Endgame’s climactic emotional beats freshly in mind. Given that Doomsday reunites Joe and Anthony Russo behind the camera, alongside the returning likes of Robert Downey Jr. in an entirely new role, framing Encore as connective tissue between the two films makes strategic sense.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ originally grossed $2.79 billion worldwide upon its 2019 release, making it the second-highest-grossing film of all time behind only ‘Avatar.’ Bringing it back to theaters with new material gives Marvel another opportunity to remind audiences of just how much weight that finale carried, right as the studio prepares to build its next major chapter on top of it.
Whether Encore’s new footage delivers a genuinely meaningful tease for Doomsday or simply offers fans a polished excuse to revisit the film on the big screen, the strategy behind its release feels calculated either way. With barely three months separating Encore’s debut from Doomsday’s theatrical arrival, Marvel is clearly betting that reliving Endgame’s ending will make its next ending land even harder.
