Beau DeMayo Shares the Reason Behind Reuniting Spider-Man and MJ After 26 Years

Since ‘X-Men ’97’ teased Spider-Man from the original animated series, fans have eagerly awaited his reunion with Mary Jane, and the showrunners fulfilled that hope.

In the explosive finale of ‘X-Men ’97,’ Peter Parker and Mary Jane finally come together again. Amidst numerous iconic cameos, including several Avengers, one appearance stood out. Showrunner Beau DeMayo verified its authenticity and hinted at the potential recreation of another beloved animation from the same era.

Following Professor X’s intervention, which healed Magneto and diverted Asteroid M, a cameo by Peter Parker and Mary Jane reminiscent of their appearances in the 1994-1998 Spider-Man animated series brought joy to fans. DeMayo affirmed the reunion on social media, bridging a narrative gap from the original animation where Peter and MJ never reconnected.

Director Jake Castorena of ‘X-Men ’97’ disclosed to Comicbook.com that Beau DeMayo’s aim was to offer a satisfying resolution to the unresolved cliffhanger from ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ by reuniting the beloved couple. DeMayo himself confirmed his involvement in this pivotal moment, generating excitement among fans online.

DeMayo himself has recently remarked on his decision to bring them back together:

Jake is correct. I was very bugged that we never found out what happened to MJ and I wanted to offer fellow Spidey fans a happy answer (even if an asteroid was hurtling toward the Earth at that moment) #xmen97.

This nod to the original series isn’t just a fun treat for fans—it might also hint at future plans. Lately, Marvel Studios seems to be focusing more on animated projects, sparking rumors of a revival for the original Spider-Man Animated series.

It’s been confirmed that both shows exist in the same universe. Even if the original series doesn’t return, we can appreciate the showrunners for giving closure to Peter’s story.
