Before His Death, Patrick Stewart Spoke Openly About His Strained Relationship With His Children
Sir Patrick Stewart’s death at 86 has prompted tributes from across the entertainment world. The beloved actor died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, October 28, with his family sharing that he had faced a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, in the loving care of his wife, Sunny Ozell.
Stewart leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, from his years with the Royal Shakespeare Company to iconic roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier. Yet in his later years, he was also strikingly candid about the personal costs of that success.
Among the reflections fans are revisiting is Stewart’s openness about his relationship with his children. In a 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, he described his relationship with his son Daniel and daughter Sophie as practically non-existent.
Stewart, then 83, said he and his children were separated and didn’t have relationships. He also noted that they were both in their 50s, adults with their own lives, rather than the young children he once struggled to be present for.
He admitted it had been hard to be the father he wanted to be when they were growing up. He spoke of feeling significant grief over the situation and said not a day went by without him being pained by memories of his children. Stewart didn’t shy away from taking responsibility. He explained that he had always put his acting career ahead of his family, a choice he clearly came to regret.
He had expressed similar feelings years earlier. In a 2009 interview with The Independent, he said he could have done better as a parent when his kids were little, admitting that he had been obsessed with his work and everything else took second place.
He also recalled being horrified when Daniel first told him he wanted to become an actor. Daniel went on to build his own career, with credits including ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ and ‘Silent Witness’. Stewart had both children with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. Daniel was born in 1967 and Sophie in 1972, and the couple’s marriage ended in 1990 after 22 years.
While Daniel followed his father into acting, Sophie has largely stayed out of the public eye. Both children survive him, along with Ozell. Stewart also wrote about his regrets in his 2023 memoir, ‘Making It So’, in which he reflected on his 2 failed marriages as some of the greatest regrets of his life.
Despite those painful reflections, Stewart found lasting happiness in his later years. He met jazz singer Sunny Ozell in 2008 and married her in 2013. He spoke warmly about her in interviews, calling her a sensational person and saying he was in love with her. Ozell was at his side in his final days and even inspired his last creative project, an audio recording of all 154 of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Stewart’s willingness to speak so openly about his shortcomings as a father is part of what made him so admired. Rather than presenting a polished image, he acknowledged his mistakes and the grief they caused him.
As fans remember the commanding presence he brought to the stage and screen, his candor offers a more personal picture of the man behind the roles. It’s a reminder that even the most celebrated careers often come with private sacrifices.
