Did you know that the first recorded fact of piracy goes back as far as the fourteenth century BC? How crazy is it that, we have such a long history with pirates, one that goes so far back in time. As we entered the modern world our fascination for them grew, even more, not to mention that we have examples of such films during the silent film era.

Disney has brought one of the most beloved pirate characters in recent years, and as we know there are a lot of people of all ages that enjoy adventurous pirate films. So let’s take a look at our list of 15 best pirate movies streaming right now on Disney+.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

This story of Pirates of the Caribbean follows are most beloved pirate characters, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner. They meet in an unlucky circumstance where their goal is to save the young Elizabeth Swann from pirate Captain Barbossa who has kidnapped her.

She holds a very important medallion that signaled the evil pirate crew to its location, the Royal Port. Elizabeth and Will have known each other since they were children, in fact, Elizabeth found the mysterious medallion on Will after her father and his crew fished him out of the sea where he was initially found. What does this gold medallion represent and will Jack and Will make it in time to save Elizabeth?

2. Peter Pan (1953)

This classic Disney movie adaptation of the story written by James M. Barrie follows Peter Pan, a young boy who never wants to grow up. The Darling family plans a night out for themselves, away from the children so they leave their oldest in charge. The eldest sister Wendy takes care of her little brothers.

Before they go to sleep, Wendy tells them the story about Peter Pan, which is their favorite story to listen to. Turns out, that night he truly visits them all and asks Wendy and the brothers to join him in Neverland. They accept and fly away with him and his fairy friend Tinkerbell. What happens in Neverland, who will they meet there and will they want to come back home where they will have to face growing up?

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

We are coming back to the second movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean installment called Dead Man’s Chest. We continue to follow our protagonists Will and Elizabeth whose engagement was interrupted by troubles caused by our infamous pirate Jack Sparrow.

Turns out that Jack had stolen an item that belonged to a very old and powerful pirate named Davy Jones. To save themselves, Will and Elizabeth had to find Jack and what he took from Jones.

4. Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy (2014)

This animated movie follows the story of Pixie Hollow which is Tinkerbell’s home, it is where all her friends live. This year they are holding the Four Season Festival which is always very exciting for them, everyone gathers around for the special fairy show.

Tinkerbell and her friends realize something is wrong when they see the fairy Zarina who soon after puts everyone to sleep with a special sleeping dust. She did this so she can steal the blue fairy dust that helps everyone fly. Tinkerbell and her friends follow her to see what she has been planning to do with it. They soon realize that Zarina had taken over a pirate ship because she promised her crew that she could make their ship fly.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

In the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean, we follow Will and Elizabeth who are trying to help Jack get out of Davy Jones’ hands or rather tentacles. Jack has found himself in another predicament once more, where he was imprisoned by Jones.

Meanwhile, a Chinese Pirate is trying to establish control over the Seven seas but is hopefully going to be stopped by the Flying Dutch crew who is on their way but encounter a difficult path towards the fight.

6. Descendants 2 (2017)

If you are familiar with Disney’s fantasy movie series Descendants you are going to enjoy the second one even more. To recap what happens in the first part, the story follows the children of very well-known villains. Our main characters are the daughter of Maleficent, Mal and her friends Carlos (the son of Cruella), Evie (the daughter of the Evil Queen), and Jay (the son of Jafar).

They are all sent to study at Auradon which is a place where all the heroes and good characters live. They are supposed to bridge the gap between the two worlds. This comes falling apart, and in the second movie, Mel comes back home to find her nemesis Uma (Ursula’s daughter). She has to regain her place at home fighting against Uma and her pirate crew.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Another Pirates of the Caribbean installment, filled with many action sequences and intense new rivals. Our protagonist Jack meets Angelica, another pirate in search of the mysterious Fountain of Youth. It is said to be just a legend but new evidence resurfaced and there is now a full-on search for this myth.

On their path, they encounter one of the most feared pirates called Blackbeard who is also on the lookout for the Fountain. Will they find it, does it even exist, tune in to find out.

8. Davy Crockett and the River Pirates (1956)

This is a 1956 Disney live-action film that also acts as a prequel to the Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. The story follows a witty Davy Crockett and his friend Georgie who arrive at the Mississippi River. They encounter a man named Mike Fink who is a keelboat captain and the only one who can let them pass through.

He insists on a really hefty price to cross the river and Davy refuses to pay it. They decide to settle it by racing down the same river.

9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

This is the final installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean, and it follows Jack Sparrow once again on the run from his past. When he was just starting out as a young pirate Jack and his crew attacked a Spanish Captain Salazar. Jack essentially sent them to their deaths, but something awakened Salazar, extreme hatred toward pirates that turned him into a ghost.

Now, Salazar finally found Jack and he is on his way to find him and have his revenge. Along Jack’s side is a young man named Henry and a female companion named Carina.

10. Swiss Family Robinson (1960)

Disney’s movie adaptation of the fictional novel by Johann Wyss, Swiss Family Robinson, is a family adventure story about survival. The Robinson family tried to escape Napoleon’s reign by going away to New Guinea. On the way, they get into a shipwreck and eventually get stranded on an island.

While trying to figure out a way to return to civilization they are attacked by different wild animals that live there. To try and avoid their attacks they build a treehouse, but soon after that, they spot a pirate ship coming their way. They have to somehow fight them off, will they manage to do that, and will they one day get back to civilization?

11. Drain the Sunken Pirate City (2017)

This is a National Geographic documentary about a lost city, Jamaica’s Kingston Harbour. It is the seventh-largest natural harbor and it was once the most famous Pirate pit stop. Once called the Port Royal and “The wickedest city on Earth”.

In 1692 it was struck by an earthquake and later a tsunami and completely destroyed. Archaeologists have finally pieced together the story of Port Royal and you can stream it out on Disney+.

12. Peter Pan and the Return To Neverland (2002)

This movie is a sequel to the first Peter Pan film from 1953. Wendy and her brothers have all grown up. Wendy even got married and has two children of her own, Jane and Danny. While Peter is still in Neverland fighting his nemesis Captain Hook. Hook is looking for Peter everywhere but cannot seem to find him.

He decides to lure him by kidnapping Jane, who he thought was Wendy. This set everyone into a panic, and Peter went to save Jane, he managed to get her out of Hook’s hold. He even tried to show her how his world is magical and fun but Jane was nothing like her mom.

13. Shipwrecked (1990)

This is a story about a young Norwegian boy named Hakon who is working on a ship so he could help his family. While they are sailing he discovers a young girl hiding on their ship. He tries to help her hide through the rest of the way but that did not work out.

The orphan girl Mary was found by the captain of the ship who threatened to throw her overboard. Hakon with the aid of his friend did not let that happen. While they were fighting the storm came along and their ship wrecked. Now they are left alone to survive on a desert island with pirates on their way.

14. Treasure Planet (2002)

This Academy Award nominee is a retelling of the original Treasure Island story by Roger Louis Stevenson but set in the Science Fiction genre. The story follows a young boy named Jim Hawkins who is very eager for an adventure to come his way.

Even as a child he would dream of Treasure Island. Now he is older but still holds the same beliefs, will his dreams come true and what does the future hold next for him? Look out for this Disney underdog but a fan favorite nevertheless.

15. 20 000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954)

This story follows professor Aronnax and his assistant Conseil who are sent to investigate a series of ship and submarine disappearances. Joining them is a witty harpoonist called Ned Land. The rumor is that a sea monster is doing all of these attacks.

The team was patrolling for months before finally seeing the monster. What happened next and how will they handle this encounter?
