10 Best Yuri Anime on Crunchyroll, Ranked by MyAnimeList Score
As it is defined, yuri is a special genre of Japanese media that focuses on “intimate relationships between female characters. While lesbianism is a commonly associated theme, the genre is also inclusive of works depicting emotional and spiritual relationships between women that are not necessarily romantic or sexual in nature.” In short, yuri is all about girl’s love (which is also a second term for the whole genre), and it doesn’t, as people usually think, have to be associated with sexual themes and sexual relationships between female characters.
Yuri is quite a popular genre, so we have brought you a list of the ten best yuri anime you can watch on Crunchyroll as of the time of writing, ranked by their MyAnimeList score. You’ll learn about each title and why we think you should give it a go. Still, we do have to warn you that not all titles on this list will be exclusively yuri, i.e., some will have yuri content as a subplot or as something that is just implied but not officially confirmed.
10. NTR: Netsuzou Trap

MyAnimeList Score: 5.33/10
What it’s about: The girls Yuma and Hotaru are friends and neighbors. When Yuma has her first boyfriend, the more experienced Hotaru is curious and offers to help her. She secretly practices kissing with her; things aren’t going too badly, but Yuma doesn’t want to admit that she likes Hotaru’s kiss better. Meanwhile, Hotaru herself has also found a partner in Fujiwara. While the four of them often go on dates, Hotaru always wants to “practice” with Yuma and, over time, makes her doubt her feelings for the boy while secretly developing feelings for her.
Why you should watch it: Although short, Netsuzou Trap is truly what yuri is all about; it is a very emotional and heartwarming story of how two girls fall in love, which is why we recommend it.
9. Valkyrie Drive

MyAnimeList Score: 6.05/10
What it’s about: All three of the franchise’s projects center on young women who have contracted the enigmatic A Virus. The Exters, who can change into weapons when sexually stimulated, and the Liberators, who can control the Exters while they are in the form of weapons, are two different categories of subjects.
Why you should watch it: Valkyrie Drive was initially a Funimation title that was moved to Crunchyroll after the acquisition. We recommend it because it effectively blends the action-driven narrative with the yuri aspect of the characters’ stories.
8. citrus

MyAnimeList Score: 6.45/10
What it’s about: Yuzu is a young kogaru who, as a result of her mother’s second marriage, is forced to relocate and enter a new girls’ school. This new school is very rigid, especially about the students’ appearance. She immediately fights with the student office, notably with its president, Mei Aihara, a particularly icy, severe, and rigorous student whom she quickly grows to despise. Yuzu learns that she would have to share her room with a new half-sister that evening at home and that half-sister is none other than Mei. Will Yuzu be able to learn to coexist with someone she despises?
Why you should watch it: And while the citrus manga is definitely a yuri classic that everyone loves, the anime never did the romance justice. Still, it is a must-watch for all yuri fans and a true delight, but if you want even more, read the manga.
7. Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san

MyAnimeList Score: 6.52/10
What it’s about: Yachiyo Inugami is a girl who has dog-like behavior and loves cats, while Suzu Nekoyama is the opposite. She has cat-like behavior and adores dogs. At the moment the two girls meet, they immediately fall for each other. The story follows the relationship of the two girls and other characters, also personifying various other animals.
Why you should watch it: This one is more quirky and fun than you’d expect from a yuri work, but it still focuses on the emotions between the female protagonists, which is why we definitely recommend it.
6. Sakura Trick

MyAnimeList Score: 6.96/10
What it’s about: Ever since middle school, Haruka Takayama and Yu Sonoda have been best friends. However, when they first enter their new high school class, they discover that they are seated too far away. When Haruka notices Yu getting along well with her classmates, she starts to feel envious and resolves to give Yu a gift that will strengthen their bond.
Why you should watch it: This is also a title that was once on Crunchyroll’s roster and that we hope we’ll see again in the future, as the story is a very effective blend of romance and slice of life that will definitely be worth your while, all the more if you’re a yuri fan.
5. Whispered Words

MyAnimeList Score: 7.06/10
What it’s about: The story centers on Sumika Murasame, a fifteen-year-old student, and Ushio Kazama, her best friend with whom she is actually in love with, although that is a secret. The problem is that Kazama also likes girls, but only if they are cute and vulnerable. At the same time, Murasame is tall, smart, and good at sports, especially karate, so she has to keep her feelings to herself while watching Ushio He falls in love with other girls.
Why you should watch it: Whispered Words is another title that was once in Crunchyroll’s library, and we honestly hope that it will make a comeback. And while it is full of tropes, this yuri comedy about an unlikely friendship that becomes something bigger is a true delight that we wholeheartedly recommend.
4. Sweet Blue Flowers

MyAnimeList Score: 7.10/10
What it’s about: After almost ten years away, normal student Akira Okudaira moves back to her childhood city to attend the prestigious Fujigaya Girls’ School. Before she can even settle in there, Fumi Manjōme, who attends the nearby Matsuoka Girls’ School, makes a terrible discovery for her. Her friend and older cousin, Chizu Hanashiro, has now found a man whom she wants to marry. This shattered the dreams of Fumi, who is tall but can easily be made to cry and who has been attending school quite listlessly ever since.
Why you should watch it: Sweet Blue Flowers was once available on Crunchyroll, and we are hopeful that it returns to the library, which is why we have listed it here, as it is a truly endearing tale that combines coming-of-age elements and romance, and from which we can learn a lot.
3. YuruYuri

MyAnimeList Score: 7.57/10
What it’s about: Just after the start of her first school year at middle school, Akari Akaza enters the Entertainment Club, composed solely of two of her childhood friends, Kyoko Toshinō and Yui Funami. Chinatsu Yoshikawa, a classmate of Akari’s, becomes a member of the club after learning that the Tea Club has been disbanded, which is where she originally wanted to join. We then follow the daily lives of these four young girls.
Why you should watch it: YuruYuri is a fun tale filled with sweet and funny moments that surpass all traditional genre-related tropes and become a fun mishmash of just everything. There are several seasons and OVAs, and all of them will be fun to watch.
2. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury

MyAnimeList Score: 7.89/10
What it’s about: AS (Ad Stella) 122 – A time period in which numerous businesses established a significant space-based economy. A lonely student from the far-off planet Mercury, Suletta Mercury, is transferred to the Asticassia Technological School, which is run by the Benerit Group, the leader in the mobile suit market. Suletta enters a new world bit by step, with a red spark burning inside the pure heart she possesses.
Why you should watch it: An unlikely addition to the list, we know, but Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury actually has a very strong yuri premise behind all that science-fiction, and since it is one of the more popular works on Crunchyroll recently, we had to list it here, although we have to warn you that it is an atypical yuri title.
1. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

MyAnimeList Score: 7.96/10
What it’s about: A dragon named Toru from another world and an employee named Kobayashi had a chance encounter one evening. Toru moves in as Kobayashi’s servant to repay her kindness, which draws the notice of other dragons who are visiting the human realm.
Why you should watch it: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a fairly popular and well-known yuri title that you will definitely enjoy, but we do have to warn you that there is also a lot of fan service, fantasy, and comedy that waters down the yuri elements of the story.
