The hit British spy thriller ‘Black Doves’ returns to Netflix for its second season on Thursday, November 5, almost two years after its December 2024 launch. The series stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw and was created by Joe Barton.

The return of ‘Black Doves’ arrives with a full trailer, a larger ensemble and a story that moves closer to the centre of British politics. Here is what has been confirmed about the schedule, the footage, the story and the people involved.

‘Black Doves’ Release Schedule on Netflix

The date was not announced with much fanfare. According to What’s on Netflix, the return date was tucked into Netflix’s showcase of upcoming UK projects at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

All six hour long episodes of the new season will be released on November 5. Listings indicate that every episode will be available at once, so there is no weekly rollout planned.

The date falls on Bonfire Night in the UK, which the outlet took as a cue to expect plenty of fireworks. That timing also places the series about a month earlier than the December slot the first season used.

Netflix renewed the show for a second season before the first one premiered, and it has not officially confirmed a third. A decision on further episodes will likely depend on how audiences respond to the new season.

The ‘Black Doves’ Trailer and What It Shows

Before anything reached the public, attendees at the Edinburgh showcase were shown an exclusive clip from the season. Netflix has since shared a trailer, a poster and new images.

Variety framed the footage as Knightley’s character investigating spy murders alongside a new team. Empire noted that the trailer establishes that Mrs. Reed has gone missing and that Black Doves agents are dying in quick succession.

The AV Club described Helen as fighting for her life in the preview. It also highlighted a dry remark from Sam about another addition to the “psychotic girl gang.” That line suggests the show is holding on to the dark humour that defined its first run.

Plot Details for the Second Season

Helen is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves, but her husband Wallace is preparing to become prime minister, which puts her on a more treacherous path than before. The political stakes now sit inside her own home.

Her handler, Mrs. Reed, is ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position within the Black Doves, and Helen is reunited with her best friend Sam. The once high end triggerman has been reduced to lonely drinks in Soho bars and low rate hits.

Their search for the truth behind Reed’s disappearance takes them across London and Paris. Along the way loyalties are weaponised, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.

Barton writes and executive produces, while Julian Farino and Kieron Hawkes direct this season. The first season reportedly earned a 92 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, helped by the chemistry between Knightley and Whishaw and a blend of spy drama, dark comedy and family problems.

Cast Members Returning and Joining

Knightley returns as Helen Webb, Whishaw as Sam Young, Sarah Lancashire as Reed and Andrew Buchan as Wallace. Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey and Molly Chesworth also come back from the first season.

Ambika Mod joins as Laila, an acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent sent to help Helen on a mission. Neve Campbell plays Cecile Mason, a US defence envoy. Babou Ceesay appears as Mr. Conteh, a Black Doves executive with suspicious motivations.

Sam Riley plays Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organisation who offers Sam a lifeline. Sylvia Hoeks and Goran Kostic play Katia and Alexi Chernov, and Samuel Barnett plays Jerry.

Netflix UK executive Anne Mensah said the show is what happens when top writing, directing and acting meet “in a dark alley with guns and champagne.” We would like to hear in the comments whether you think Sam should trust the lifeline Patrick offers, or whether Helen’s double life will unravel first as Wallace edges closer to becoming prime minister.
