23 Most Memorable Black Widow Quotes

Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, is a member of the original Avengers team. Although she’s just a human, she is in peak physical condition and has such lethal training that she can go toe to toe with superhuman threats. But, what makes her such a beloved character is her brilliant intellect.
Black Widow is a masterful combatant, but her personality is what sets her apart. Romanoff has some of the best quotes that sunk into our memory forever, both in the comic books and the MCU, where Scarlett Johansson portrays her. Here’s a list of the 23 most memorable Black Widow quotes from the movies and the comic books.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 is an MCU movie from 2010 and the first movie where we get to meet agent Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. In this movie already, we get to know her and her snappy personality, as she delivered some awesome quotes in her first appearance.
“That’s not up to you.”
Although Tony Stark sees himself as the leader or Natasha’s boss, she quickly shows her personality when dismissing him after he tries to fire her. She quickly snaps back at him, letting him know he’s not the one calling the shots, although he might think that he is.
“Eyes on the road.”
Black Widow is a sexy, beautiful woman, but she’s all about her business. When she and Happy are driving to take down Hammer, she changes into her combat suit in the front seat. Happy can’t help but look for a bit too long, getting this memorable quote from Romanoff, clearly showing her strong, independent character that doesn’t tolerate being objectified.
Best Black Widow Quotes from The Avengers
The first installment of The Avengers came into theaters in 2012, gathering the original team of Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. I adored both Natasha and Clint in the team because it just shows their courage and character.
Regardless of being just humans with no special gadgets or powers to help them, they still battle among gods, magic, and extraterrestrials daily.
“This is monsters and magic, and nothing we were ever trained for.”
This quote perfectly paints my point. Natasha said this to Clint, stating that all the training in the world couldn’t prepare them for the threats they found themselves fighting against. Still, they used all their skills to play a crucial role not only in defeating Loki in this movie but participating in even bigger, harder battles later.
“I’m in the middle of an interrogation. This moron is giving me everything.”
The first time I’ve seen The Avengers, right at the very beginning, this Black Widow quote happens. Nat is tied to a chair, seemingly helpless and on the brink of death, being held captive. In a moment, a phone rings, and her kidnapper lets her answer. It turns out it was agent Coulson, and then Romanoff delivers the before-mentioned quote.
It turns out Nat had the “kidnappers” right where she wanted them. While playing the victim, they gave her all the information she needed to know, after which she puts Coulson on hold and obliterates her captors.
I found it extremely amusing and a true testament to her fiery personality and a statement to everybody underestimating her abilities simply because she’s human.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Winter Soldier is the second Captain America movie, where the number one villain is Bucky, influenced by brainwashing and mind control. Natasha appears and plays a big role in the movie, and it’s probably the first time we can clearly see the bond between her and Cap.
“Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable.”
I agree, Natasha. They really do. Romanoff is not the type to show her emotions too much – at least not at this point in the MCU. She loved her Avengers family, especially Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, but she never felt the need to display it publicly. That’s just who she is.
Well, unless it can get them out of trouble. She kisses him as Rumlow passes by, but when he sees them kiss, he turns his head away in discomfort. The whole situation has Steve and Nat even more uncomfortable, which made me laugh out loud.
“Either one of you knows where the Smithsonian is? I’m here to pick up a fossil.”
This one made me giggle, as the friendly smack-talk between Cap and Nat feels so natural and unforced. While Rogers and Romanoff never had a romantic connection, their friendship and love are immense.
The fossil joke is meant for Steve, seeing that he had been frozen for about seventy years, meaning he’s actually quite an old guy despite his body still being young.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Avengers: Age of Ultron
The second Avengers movie, Age of Ultron, came to theaters in 2015. The Avengers had to take care of a threat of their own doing, the Ultron. We’re introduced to new team members, and we can see Romanoff’s character arc starting to form.
“That’s not a question I need answered.”
Black Widow delivers this awesome quote when the team is sitting in the headquarters, and everybody tries to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, to see if they’re worthy of its power. Natasha refuses to try, not because she’s scared she’ll fail, but simply because she doesn’t care what the answer is. It shows just how confident and independent Nat is.
“All my friends are fighters. And, here comes this guy, spending his life avoiding the fight because he knows he’ll win.”
Romanoff is focused and dedicated to her job, and she might often seem distant and cold. However, she has her way of showing affection and appreciation, like in this conversation with Bruce Banner, where she recognizes and describes his character perfectly.
Although he’s one of the mightiest beings in the universe, Banner doesn’t want to use The Hulk to assert dominance. But instead, he wants to avoid fighting as much as he can, even though he knows Hulk can only win against almost anybody.
“Pretending to need this guy really brings this team together.”
The only person Nat might have a stronger connection and friendship with than with Captain America is Hawkeye. They have been through hell together way before Nick Fury and the S.H.I.E.L.D. ever formed the Avengers, and their friendship is unbreakable.
Still, she loves picking on him and joking at his expense, and vice versa. This quote is a joke on her behalf as much as it is on him, joking about being fragile humans on a team of superheroes.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Captain America: Civil War
Captain America: Civil War was a 2016 movie that put a ripple in the squad. Due to Cap’s and Iron Man’s disagreement, the members of the Avengers and their wider teams chose sides and battled one another (before the quarrel was resolved later due to a much bigger threat).
“Are we still friends?”
Although Nat and Clint found themselves on opposite sides in the Civil War, not seeing things the same way never got between them and their friendship. They knew the fight eventually had to stop, and their intention was never to hurt one another. That just shows that as cold as Black Widow can appear, she has love and affection for her newfound family.
“Staying together is more important than how we stay together.”
That’s quite a controversial statement from Natasha, which can be interpreted differently depending on how you look at it and which side you are on. If you’re Team Cap, you might not agree with this. However, you must understand that Natasha lost her real family but found one even more real in her Avengers team.
She would do anything to keep them together, no matter what the price might be. It’s a controversial quote, which is what makes it such a memorable quote as well.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War came out in 2018, and it is where all the worst stuff for Natasha and the rest of the time happened. Thanos won, and the Avengers (as well as the rest of the universe) was cut in half. Although they were dealing with a seemingly unwinnable task, she was still brave and capable enough to survive.
“Where’s your other friend?”
Near the movie’s beginning, Natasha, Steve, and Sam (The Falcon) save Vision and the Scarlet Witch from a surprise attack from Thanos’ subordinates, Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive. After a while, Corvus dies in the movie.
Upon meeting with Proxima in battle again, she delivers this witty poke that visibly enrages Proxima while the Widow just smirks it off. I love her sense of humor, even when all the odds are against them.
“She’s not alone.”
If there were ever a Black Widow quote that screamed “Women Power,” then this would be the one. The Scarlet Witch tries to fight the threat while watching over Vision, trying to separate him from the Mind Stone. As Wanda remains stranded alone, Natasha and Okoye (Dora Milaje general) team up to help her.
The quote and the scene were just iconic, and seeing them three fight together to defeat the common enemy is one of the most satisfying moments of the entire movie.
Best Black Widow Quote(s) from Captain Marvel (cameo)
In the 2019 movie Captain Marvel, the Black Widow only appeared in a short cameo role but still got a highly memorable quote that hit right on the money.
“I’ve had better nightmares.”
Thanos successfully obliterated half of all life forms in the universe. As Captain America, War Machine, and Black Widow sit in the Avengers headquarters looking at the increasing number of victims stemming from Thanos’ deeds, Rogers says: “This is a nightmare.”
Natasha answers with such a memorable quote, really helping the severity and the horror of the situation sink in when she says: “I’ve had better nightmares.”
Best Black Widow Quotes from Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019, and it starts with the aftermath of Thanos collecting all six Infinity Stones, snapping his fingers, and killing to help the universe. Black Widow was one of the survivors, but it was clear right from the start that she wasn’t going to sit back doing nothing to try and bring everybody back.
“Even if there’s a small chance that we can undo this, I mean, we owe it to everyone who is not in this room to try.”
Even after the horrible defeat at the hands of The Mad Titan, Natasha never lost hope that everything could change once again. Especially after Scott Lang, aka The Ant-Man, came to their door with an idea to reverse everything that had happened.
Thank God they decided to try something, as they eventually succeeded. But, the quote is so memorable because it shows just how much Natasha cared and how much she loves every one of her friends. To her, they aren’t just friends; they are family.
“Scott, I get emails from a raccoon. So, nothing sounds crazy anymore.”
Yes, that’s the reality of the situation, Scott. I laughed out loud at this quote where Natasha refers to Rocket sending her emails and communicating with her daily.
She delivers the quote while talking to Ant-Man, who wasn’t a part of the Infinity War, so he doesn’t know what kind of crazy stuff happened since their last encounter in Civil War.
When you get emails from a raccoon, a bit of time traveling doesn’t sound that crazy anymore.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Black Widow
Finally, the Black Widow movie that hit the theaters in 2021 disappointed many fans but still gave the character a nice finishing touch, as Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will no longer appear on the screen. It depicted the events happening right before Infinity War, as Romanoff was once again reunited with her long-lost sister.
“You get to make your own choices now.”
This quote just completed Natasha Romanoff’s character arc for me. As she finally frees the other Black Widow from Dreykov’s mind control, they are lost, as they never made their own choices, so they seek guidance from her.
After that, she delivers the line, “You get to make your own choices now.”, and instructs them to run. Instead, they decide to hunt down Dreykov and show gratitude towards Nat, who was once like them but gave them the freedom of choice they deserved – just like her.
“It was real for me too.”
As we learn more about Black Widow’s backstory, we get to know her first family. It turns out they were never really a real family, and her sister finds that out decades later. It breaks her, saying, “ It was real for me.”
Well, Natasha always felt like they were real sisters as well, saying “It was real for me too” to her sister in a very emotional moment in the movie. Although Nat knew they were never a real family, it still felt real to her, too.
Best Black Widow Quotes from What If…?
What if…? season one just recently got to Disney+, and it’s the first time in the MCU that Scarlett Johansson hadn’t returned as (the voice of) Natasha Romanoff. Instead, Lake Bell voiced the character and did quite a good job.
Black Widow appears in three out of nine episodes. She had some screen time, but she didn’t get too many memorable quotes, though. Still, the few she did get were awesome to me.
“Showoff.”
Nat talks to Nick Fury about their current affairs. She says she’s dealing with “General Ross, a dozen snipers, and a few tanks” before asking Fury what he’s got. He replies, “Space Vikings.” The Widow gives him her characteristic snapback, calling him a showoff.
It felt like a genuine and accurate depiction of their relationship and Romanoff’s colorful personality.
“We’re just stories to you. We’re not real.”
In the final episode of the show, Natasha comes face to face with The Watcher. Ultron in Vision’s body harnessing all six Infinity Stones is wreaking multiversal havoc, while The Watcher refuses to interfere.
It angers Black Widow as she sees The Watcher’s actions – or lack thereof – as an insult. He acts as if they weren’t real beings. He sees them all as just stories. The quote hit the mark, as Ultron did get incapacitated afterward.
Best Black Widow Quotes from Comics
Although the general public learned who the Black Widow is just a little more than a decade ago when she appeared in the MCU, the character had been around in Marvel Comics since 1964 and the Tales of Suspense #52.
In almost sixty years of character development, she delivered some great quotes. You can get a much better sense of who she is, what her personality, goals, motifs, and emotions are when you read the comics instead of just focusing on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’ll try to give you a few examples I love the most.
“I owe you a great debt, Logan. Someday, somehow… I will make it up to you.”
Natasha or Natalia Romanova delivers this quote in Wolverine: Origins Vol. 1 #9. It’s not the quote alone that made it so memorable for me, but rather the way she delivered it.
If I remember correctly, she used the same phrase when talking to Loki in The Avengers movie. When referring to Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, she says, “Love is for children; I owe him a debt.”
I love how the writers kept and highlighted that part of her personality, sharing the same values in the films as she holds onto in the comics. Of course, she clearly cares for Clint and later her whole Avengers family, but she won’t ever express it or show it openly – she shows her affection with loyalty and action.
“I’m my own woman — first, last — and always!”
Black Widow operates with the Avengers most of the time. However, if she doesn’t like what’s asked of her, she will do what she believes is the best. She is strong, independent and capable of making her own decisions.
The quote is from her appearance in Daredevil Vol. 1 #94.
“We serve, but we are not puppets.”
Just another quote to emphasize what I’ve already mentioned in the previous quote; Black Widow serves and willfully works for the greater good. But, she won’t ever allow again to be manipulated like a puppet, which she clearly states with this epic quote from Black Widow Vol. 5 #20.
