Deadpool & Wolverine was one of the biggest movies of the year, second only to Inside Out 2 at the box office. However, we know that box office numbers aren’t everything when it comes to a movie’s overall quality.

The third Deadpool movie pleased many fans (though not all critics), as it provided closure for some of Marvel’s legacy characters like Snipes’ Blade and Garner’s Elektra. It also set up exciting possibilities for mutants in the MCU.

The movie ends with Deadpool and Wolverine returning to Deadpool’s reality after saving it from TVA’s Mr. Paradox and the Time Ripper machine. Wolverine gets a chance to save reality and “redeem himself,” while Deadpool hopes to impress Vanessa and maybe even convince the Avengers to let him join their team.

Before this, fans were unsure if Deadpool and Wolverine would survive, as they risked their lives to destroy the Time Ripper. However, this wasn’t the original ending that director Shawn Levy had planned.

In the Deadpool & Wolverine director’s commentary, it was revealed that Blake Lively suggested a change to the ending, leading to a brief round of reshoots. Originally, the climax showed Deadpool and Wolverine saving the day and immediately surviving the battle.

In the final version, the audience is left unsure about Deadpool and Wolverine’s fate while Paradox gives a passionate speech to B-15. The scene ends with Deadpool and Wolverine walking out to interrupt Paradox, with the song “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls playing.

Reynolds shared that he was proud the movie only needed a day and a half of reshoots, which is rare for movies of this size, as they usually require weeks of extra filming.

He especially mentioned a reshot scene where Matthew Macfadyen delivers a powerful speech, calling it a standout moment and praising Macfadyen’s performance as “miraculous.”

We did just a day-and-a-half of reshoots on the movie, which we’re very proud of, these kinds of movies typically involve weeks of reshoots. But this speech that Matthew has is one of the pieces that we reshot. And he is miraculous

Director Shawn Levy then revealed that it was Blake Lively’s suggestion that led to the change in the ending.

And credit where credit is due. It used to be that there was no suspense, that the power room blew up, and our heroes had survived. And it was Blake Lively who said to us, ‘You know, I’ve been with you this whole movie. I want to sit in the fear that they’re lost. Let me be in that place of suspense so the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral.

That was a Blake note and it really opened up a new way of thinking about this part of the movie and it’s why we did this reshoot… and, here, the payoff is so much more satisfying.

Blake Lively also had a role in the movie, playing the mysterious Lady Deadpool, one of the fan-favorite versions of the character.
