Bleach: How Did Yhwach Get His Voice Back?

There is no denying that the fight between Yhwach and Ichibei was one of the best and most exciting battles in Bleach and showed just how powerful both Yhwach and Ichibei were. Now, in this article, we will talk about that battle, but we will focus on one specific moment, as we will explain how Yhwach managed to give himself his voice back after Ichibei had taken it away.

  • Article breakdown:
  • At one point during their battle, Ichibei used his Name Curse technique to completely destroy Yhwach’s voice, which left the Quincy emperor unable to speak or use any of his techniques during the battle.
  • After being attacked by Ichibei, Yhwach pierced his own throat and proclaimed that he was giving himself a voice and that Ichibei could not take it away from him, proceeding to attack Ichibei, who was unfazed by this.
  • Due to his god-like abilities, Yhwach has what is called a Self-Power Restoration ability, which allows him to restore or grant himself any powers that are taken away from him, just as he can give and take powers to and from the other Quincy.

Yhwach has god-like abilities, which make him a very difficult opponent to beat

The event that will be the focus of this article happened during the battle between Ichibei and Yhwach in the beginning. Namely, not long after the second invasion of the Seireitei, which saw the latter being replaced by the Wandenreich, Ichigo returned from the Soul King’s Palace to help his friends after completing his training with the Zero Division.

Yhwach used that fact and the fact that the gate to the Palace was now open to invade it with his Schutzstaffel (and Nianzol Weizol, who died quickly). The Quincy were then trapped in Kirio Hikifune’s Cage of Life, but Yhwach managed to get out of it thanks to Ishida’s help and went to face Ichibei; as the remaining Zero Division members were fighting the Schutzstaffel, Yhwach began his fight with Ichibei.

The fight started with Ichibei drawing two black lines on the floor, claiming that he would kill Yhwach in that space. Yhwach did not believe him, saying that the Monk would fall three steps short of his own line. Yhwach kept using Ichibei’s name, to which the Monk responded that no matter how much he chastised him for it, he kept using his name and that that would result in him losing his voice. While the fight commenced, Ichibei demonstrated his abilities, and Yhwach soon realized that he had lost his voice because he had spoken Ichibei’s name.

Bleach: Why Was Ichibei Holding the Soul King in His Arms? Is Ichibei the True Soul King?

Being the “Monk Who Calls the Real Name,” Ichibei was tasked by the Soul King to name all things in the world, and his theory is that the name is what gives an object or phenomenon its meaning and, thus, its power. So, it makes sense that many of Ichibei’s powers were related to his powers.

One aspect of these name-related powers is that Ichibei can steal the voice of anyone who calls out his full name. This is his so-called Name Curse ability. His Zanpakutō also plays a role in these abilities: when sealed, rather than cutting through flesh, the brush “splits” the essence of the name of all things it touches. This has the effect that the object in question is conceptually reduced by half of its existence – and, therefore, its power.

Should Ichibei die, he can still make telepathic contact with someone approaching his remains. The latter must then call out his full name, allowing Ichibei to absorb a fraction of that person’s power and use it to fully restore his body (similar to Orihime’s restorative abilities), no matter how much of it remains.

It is unclear exactly how much force Ichibei has to absorb for this or whether this only works with extremely strong “donors.” In any case, Ichigo showed no signs of weakening after the trial or seemed not to notice the loss of his strength at all.

So, using these abilities, Ichibei could completely steal Yhwach’s voice, which meant that the Quincy emperor could not speak or use any of his techniques. Shocked, Yhwach became an easy target for Ichibei, who used his Senri Tsūtenshō to attack Yhwach.

But, while he was falling down, Yhwach pierced his own throat with his fingers as Reishi began flowing out his throat, proclaiming then that he was going to give himself a voice and that Ichibei could do absolutely nothing about it. This did not surprise Ichibei, and he simply continued to attack Yhwach further, with the Quincy Emperor seemingly having no way of defeating the leader of the Zero Division.

So, what is the issue here? How was Yhwach able to restore his powers and abilities in the first place? After losing his voice to Ichibei, how was Yhwach able to give himself a voice and annul the powerful Shinigami’s technique? Well, this is due to one of his own special techniques.

Namely, Yhwach possesses a special ability known as Self-Power Restoration, which means that he can actually give himself a power that has been taken from him or sealed. This is how he restored his voice, as he has given himself his own voice, not even caring about the one that Ichibei had stolen from him. This makes sense if you look better at Yhwach’s powers and abilities.

Namely, as the “father” of the Quincy, Yhwach was ultimately able to give powers to other Quincy, and via Auswahlen, he could also take powers from them. Seeing how he had some amazing god-like powers, it makes sense that Yhwach was also able to give himself powers, and that is what he did in this case.
