Bleach: Rukia's Shikai, Sode no Shirayuki, Explained!

Share:

Rukia Kuchiki is one of Bleach’s protagonists and one of the series’ most popular characters. A member of Ukitake’s 13th Division, she was responsible for Ichigo gaining the powers of a Shinigami and had, since then, followed him on his adventures around the realms. Rukia is also an exceptionally powerful character, and in this article, we have decided to tell you a bit about her Shikai, Sode no Shirayuki, which is said to be the most beautiful Shikai of them all.

Rukia Kuchiki’s Zanpakuto is called Sode no Shirayuki, which is also the name of her Shikai. It is an Elemental-type Zanpakuto whose element is Ice, like Toshiro’s. The name is translated as “Sleeved White Snow” or “Sleeves of White Snow.” It is released using the command “Dance,” after which Rukia performs a series of movements that release the Shikai. The released form of Sode no Shirayuki is completely white and is said to be the most beautiful Zanpakuto in Soul Society. After training with the Zero Division, Rukia has managed to unlock the true power of her Zanpakuto, which was significantly more powerful than her original one.

The rest of this article is going to tell you about Rukia Kuchiki and her Shikai, Sode no Shirayuki. We are going to tell you about the Shikai, what its powers and abilities are, especially its individual techniques, and we are going to tell you how it evolved from the original version we saw at the beginning of the series to the true version of the Shikai that we saw in Rukia’s fight against As Nodt. The article is going to contain a fair amount of spoilers, so we have to warn you about that so that you know how to approach it.

Rukia’s Sode no Shirayuki is both powerful, and uniquely beautiful

Rukia Kuchiki is one of the best-known characters in Bleach. She is an exceptionally popular character that has been around since episode one, and her role in Ichigo’s story is immense. Rukia is the one whose powers Ichigo Kurosaki borrowed while he was the Substitute Shinigami. She was the reason why he and his friends went to Soul Society for the first time; she was also central to Aizen’s plot and was later present in Hueco Mundo and when Ichigo regained his powers in the Fullbringer Arc. She can be described as one of Ichigo’s best friends, and she has grown the most as a character alongside him.

She was initially a scared, insecure girl who hid her insecurities behind a facade of arrogance and coldness, but as the story evolved, more and more of Rukia’s personality came to the forefront, and she became much more open, a better, stronger person, and the best friend Ichigo could want.

And while her story is undeniably interesting – and we have already talked about several aspects of Rukia’s story – this article is not going to be focused on the story as much as it is going to be focused on her skills and abilities. Her story will be important for one aspect of her powers and abilities, but more on that later.

This article’s topic will be Rukia’s Zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki, and its Shikai form. We won’t be discussing Rukia’s Bankai here, so if you want to know more about her Bankai, you should check our separate article on that topic.

As we have said, Rukia’s Bankai is called Sode no Shirayuki, which has been translated as “Sleeved White Snow” or “Sleeves of White Snow.” The Shikai is released using the command “Dance” (Japanese: 舞え, Mae), after which Rukia performs some moves: she puts the blade in front of her and turns it in a circle, counter-clockwise. The entire sword becomes snow-white, and a long, white band wraps around the end of the hilt. For this reason, it is also considered the most beautiful of all snow and ice Zanpakutōs in Soul Society and the most beautiful in general.

As you can assume, Sode no Shirayuki is an ice-based Elemental-type Zanpakuto, so all of Sode no Shirayuki’s attacks are Ice-based. Rukia calls all three attacks known so far dances:

  1. The first attack, called Some no mai, Tsukishiro (初の舞・月白), forms a circle on the ground and freezes everything above the circle, reaching the sky with the attack.
  2. The second attack, Tsugi no mai, Hakuren (次の舞・白漣), manifests in a way that a powerful ice wave is launched from Sode no Shirayuki’s blade.
  3. Her third attack, called San no mai, Shirafune (参の舞・白刀), is her final ability. Since Rukia had only used this technique once so far, when Sode no Shirayuki was broken, the theory is that she can only use the San no mai, Shirafune if the blade of her sword is (partially) destroyed, but this has not been confirmed yet. This attack uses ice motes to lengthen the blade, freezing everything it touches. When first used, the battlefield was covered with thin ice (perhaps due to Glotonería’s fluidity when the octopus mass burst).

Another ability of Sode no Shirayuki is called Juhaku (樹白). In doing so, Rukia freezes the ground, and a person or object in front of her touches the ground. A filler arc also showed Sode no Shirayuki’s spirit being able to use techniques previously unseen on Rukia. This implied that Rukia either hadn’t mastered these techniques yet, or these were techniques that only her mind could perform. For example, her spirit is able to freeze things with her breath, shoot long icicles with her hands, and fire a bow of Reiatsu with her sword.

Now, initially, while the filler arc was running, fans did not know that Rukia hadn’t yet discovered the true nature of her Zanpakuto, so this was simply an implication; though, it has to be said that the true powers of her Zanpakuto turned out to be different than those portrayed in the Zanpakuto Rebellion filler arc. So, what happened there?

After the first invasion of Yhwach’s army, Rukia was heavily injured and taken by the Royal Guard to the Soul King’s Palace to recover and train. She had the most intense training in Ichibei’s Riden, and after that training, Rukia was finally able to awaken the true powers of Sode no Shirayuki: the source of the ice wasn’t the blade, but her own body, which could be cooled down to absolute zero.

Since biological functions also dry up in this state, Rukia is temporarily dead as long as she uses the technique. However, by manipulating her spirit particles, she can still move and fight, although not for a very long time. The lowest temperature Rukia can reach is -273.15°C (absolute zero), but she can only maintain her mobility for 4 seconds before experiencing the consequences, which could also lead to her death. Anything Rukia touches with her body or sword is instantly frozen at the molecular level. Also, the shock for her body is such that she has to gradually thaw herself so that she doesn’t cause even more trouble. This was demonstrated during her clash with As Nodt.
