Even among the Sternritter, Äs Nödt is a character who is a level above the others regarding their impact on everyone. Äs Nödt was introduced as a creepy figure, but as his story evolved, it became apparent that he was even creepier and that his special power was more than just symbolic – it was as real as it could be. In this article, we will focus on Äs Nödt’s Quincy: Vollständig, Tatarforas, as you will find out everything about it.

Tatarforas is the name of Äs Nödt’s Quincy: Vollständig, his more powerful form; the Quincy cross above his head becomes dark purple once Tatarforas is activated. In this form, Äs Nödt not only becomes more powerful, he also changes his appearance and becomes a monster in the most literal way imaginable, as his body becomes horribly disfigured, and he basically mutilates himself and stitches himself up to create that form. His power is significantly augmented as well, as he doesn’t need to hit his opponent anymore; they just need to see him, as he can now induce fear by simply looking at the opponent and infecting their (optical) nerves with severe fear.

The rest of this article will be focused on Äs Nödt, the Sternritter “F” – “The Fear,” who had a very important role in the first and second invasions of the Seireitei, especially in relation to Byakuya and Rukia Kuchiki. This article will focus a bit on his story but more on his powers; the story will be told only when we need it to actually explain the powers we are talking about, with the focus being on his Quincy: Vollständig, Tatarforas. If you’re not fully up-to-date with Bleach, we have to warn you that this article will be spoiler-heavy, so be careful how you approach it.

Äs Nödt’s Quincy: Vollständig, Tatarforas, is one of the scariest things ever seen in Bleach

Äs Nödt is one of the most interesting Sternritter we’ve seen in the series. His Schrift was “F” – “The Fear,” which symbolized the fact that he could induce crippling fear in his opponents, rendering them unable to fight and making them easy targets.

Now, if there was ever a Schrift that perfectly fits its Sternritter, then Äs Nödt is your guy. Äs has long black hair and large dark eyes with small light pupils. His attire is a variation of the typical Sternritter uniform, consisting of a hooded cloak, an ankle-length trench coat, and black shoes.

Äs also wears a mask covering the lower half of his face with five spikes running down the middle. In the fight against Rukia Kuchiki, Äs Nödt takes off his mask and reveals his whole face, and it can be seen that Äs has no lips. Around the mouth, Äs’ facial skin is black/dark, while the skin on the part of the face not covered by the mask is light. He generally has a very creepy appearance, which is why his Schrift is so befitting, but if you don’t believe us, here’s a picture of him smiling:

The gist of Äs Nödt’s ability stems from the fact that fear played a large role in his life, even before he actually became a Sternritter. He had feared suffering and death, but after he met Yhwach, he only feared Yhach’s scolding. Analyzing his true nature, Yhwach bestowed upon him the Schrift “F” – “The Fear,” which made him into a true monster.

The real power of Äs Nödt’s Reishi thorns is not to physically injure your opponents (although they do that as well) but much more to let the opponent feel boundless fear. Even minimal contact with them is enough to make the opponent fear Äs and sink into despair. The consequences are the loss of one’s own body movements and growing madness that spreads in the victim’s mind and makes the opponent see and feel hallucinations of his greatest fear.

Normally, the victim dies from the mental terror they are subjected to, from a failure of the body’s internal circulation and/or heart failure. You can theoretically survive this attack by Äs Nödt if your own will is extremely strong and conquers fear, but Äs thinks even the strongest willpower will eventually be broken by true fear. When the thorns of Äs encounter a body, a dark purple substance spreads out, serving as a medium for spreading fear.

Objects such as building walls can also be easily penetrated to infiltrate the enemy behind with fear, as seen when Äs claimed that Rukia’s ice wouldn’t help her much.

But, while his “The Fear” is crippling by itself, it can be countered – as Rukia’s case demonstrated – but his Quincy: Vollständig is something that is even more powerful and has an even more dangerous effect on his opponents. His Quincy: Vollständig is called Tatarforas, and it transforms Äs Nödt into a true monster, but he can change his original monstrous appearance into that of a wholly morbid creature. So, what does Tatarforas do, and why is it so dangerous?

In this form, Äs has a five-pointed halo in the shape of the Wandenreich symbol, and blood begins to flow from his eyes. In this form, Äs also wears a habit with a row of seams running down the center from the neck to the abdomen (it appears as if Äs had been cut in half from top to bottom and then sewn back together).

Because this robe is very close to the body, you can see Äs Nödt’s rib bones. Äs’ body itself appears mutilated. His full wings are only slightly indicated; these would only hinder Äs in a fight in this form. Also, Äs’ eyes are both rolled back completely, showing only the whites of the eyeball, and his forearms are coated in a black substance (similar to Ulquiorra’s released forms).

Äs is fast enough in this form to shield himself from Rukia’s attack while appearing behind her without any warning. In this form, Äs’ fear-based ability is significantly stronger and more powerful. Äs no longer relies on his Reishi thorns; instead of infiltrating his opponent with fear through touching the thorns, the mere sight of Äs’ form is now enough to trigger boundless fear in the brain via the optic nerves. Äs can create eyes that surround and stare at the victim, infecting the victim with fear. Whether these eyes are illusions or actual material objects is not entirely clear.

Even if the victim then closes their eyes, one look is enough to burn boundless fear into the opponent’s mind and memory, which now evokes suppressed or repressed fears and bad memories from the subconscious and brings them to the opponent’s attention. This happens because Tatarforas targets the nerves rather than other aspects of his opponents’ bodies, like “The Fear.” However, it seems possible for a separate person, not trapped in the illusion, to break it from the outside.

When Äs becomes extremely angry, the vertical stitching across his body tears up. Various substances, apparently organic, run out of the opening, which are similar to the material from which his eyes are made. These form a grotesquely contorted and giant version of Äs’ body, with his original body hanging from his face as an empty shell. As you can see, Äs Nödt’s Tatarforas is significantly more powerful, and only the strongest wills can actually survive a fight with this form.
