Uryu Ishida is, as fans of the series will know, an exceptionally important character in Bleach who has been there from the very beginning and is considered as one of the show’s main protagonists. Ishida’s story was, for much of the time, in the background because the story was focused on other characters; in a way, the first saga was Ichigo’s and Rukia’s, the second was Orihime’s, the third was Chad’s, and Ishida finally got some space in the Quincy Blood War. You are going to find out what happened to him in this article.

Uryu Ishida does not die in Bleach, and he did survive the events of the Thousand-Year Blood War. After realizing what a threat Yhwach was, Ishida joined him and became not only one of his Sternritter but also his successor. He seemingly betrayed his friends and allies, but it turned out that he was actually playing the part of the traitor to get close to Yhwach so he could kill him with his powers. He had a near-fatal fight with Jugram, which he managed to survive, and later helped Ichigo and the others to defeat Yhwach, surviving the whole clash.

The rest of this article will focus on the character of Uryu Ishida and his ultimate fate in the Bleach manga. Uryu Ishida is an important and intriguing character. With his role in the current anime arc being quite debatable, we understand that fans want to know what happened to him in the end, and that actually motivated us to write up this article, in which we will reveal everything that is known about his fate, which is revealed later in the manga. This article might contain a significant number of spoilers, so be careful while you’re reading.

What happened to Ishida after he betrayed the Shinigami?

The title of this section might be a bit misleading, so allow us to tell you everything that happened. As far as the manga’s final saga is concerned, Uryu makes his first appearance in this saga when he and his friends protect the Shinigamis Ryūnosuke Yuki and Shino from some Hollows. Two days later, everyone met at Ichigo’s home, where Uryu and the Shinigami initially argued as usual.

Shortly afterward, they ate the bread that Orihime had brought with them but were interrupted by a Hollow named Asguiaro Ebern, who started a fight with Ichigo and, as it turned out, was actually working for Quincy after failing to steal Ichigo’s Bankai, Ebern returned to Slibern. Later, Ryunosuke is informed by Akon about the death of Chōjirō Sasakibe. Still, Uryu thinks that the Soul Society only wants to tell Ichigo what happened through these notifications. After Nel and Pesche appeared in Karakura Town, the friends met again to discuss the Wandenreich’s capture of Hueco Mundo.

Uryu, however, says that he cannot help the others save the Arrancar as he is a Quincy. Ichigo knew this but still wanted to inform his friend. While they were fighting in Hueco Mundo, Ishida studied the hidden history of Quincy in a book his grandfather had left him and which his father had hidden away. A few days later, after the Wandenreich attacks the Soul Society, Ishida is seen approaching Jugram Haschwalth, as the latter brought Ishida to Yhwach; it became apparent, at that moment, that Uryu had decided to join the Wandenreich.

Not much later, during a meeting of the Sternritter, Yhwach then introduces Uryu. To the surprise of many, Yhwach declares that he has chosen Uryu as his successor. After the meeting, Yhwach gives Uryu some of his blood and explains that his true powers will soon awaken and, as a Sternritter, gives him the same Schrift that he himself has (A). Yhwach’s blood activated Ishida’s innate ability, The Antithesis, which would soon prove to be one of the most powerful Quincy power-ups. When Uryu asked why he was chosen as his successor, Yhwach replied that Uryu was the only “impure” Quincy (Gemischt Quincy) to survive the Auswahlen technique nine years prior. For Yhwach, this means that a great power must be hidden within Uryu that can surpass even his own.

Since then, Ishida became one of Yhwach’s most trusted allies, which angered most of the other Sternritter, save for Jugram, who respected Yhwach’s decision. However, he never stopped being suspicious of Ishida.

When Yhwach launched the second invasion of the Seireitei, replacing it with the Wandenreich, Ishida was with him and Jugram, observing the battles. Ishida did not participate in the fights but was responsible for bringing in both Cang Du and BG9 to be executed; the executions shocked him, but he said nothing. When Ichigo returned to the Seireitei and went after Yhwach, who was just heading to the Soul King’s Palace, Ishida attacked him and stopped his advance, leaving with Yhwach and Jugram.

While they were up there, Ichigo promised his friends that he would make Ishida come back to them, even if it meant that he beat him up. Meanwhile, Ishida used his The Antithesis to help Yhwach escape the Cage of Life by throwing a Medallion outside the Cage and then switching Yhwach’s position with the position of the Medallion, which led to the Quincy Emperor engaging Ichibei.

He himself did not participate in the battle against the Royal Guard. Still, when Ichigo arrived and went after Yhwach, Ishida attacked him and seemingly sent them to their death as he destroyed the ground between them.

Still, Ichigo and his friends, of course, returned, and at that moment, Ishida finally decided to reveal his true plan – he never betrayed his friends! He simply realized how dangerous Yhwach was, and he feigned being loyal to him so that he could get close to him and then use his power to kill him. And while his friends were happy, Jugram wasn’t, and Ishida faced his former ally in a bitter fight.

Both of them gave their best, but Jugram, at one point, realized that Yhwach was in the wrong and allowed Ishida to heal himself by using his power, telling him to go and save his friends. Ishida, of course, helped Ichigo fight Yhwach, and thanks to his father’s help, he provided Ichigo with a crucial advantage that allowed the Shinigami to kill Yhwach. Ishida, thus, survived the war.

What happened to Ishida after the war?

As you can see, Ishida survived the war, but what happened to him later? Well, he went on to become a doctor and was seen hanging out with his friends even though he was a Quincy. He was later also seen visiting Keigo’s ramen shop with his friends, although he was eating alone while the others were at the same table, thus proving that all of them remained friends in the future as well.
