Blue Beetle is Really Joining the DCU, with an Animated Show in the Works

Despite mostly positive reviews, Ángel Manuel Soto’s ‘Blue Beetle’ live-action movie set an unfortunate record as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie, earning less than even the poorly received ‘Shazam: Fury of the Gods.’

Since Blue Beetle was relatively unknown to most people, the movie’s underperformance wasn’t surprising. However, James Gunn assured fans that there is still a place for both Blue Beetle and Xolo Maridueña, who played him, in the DCU.

Deadline reports that a new animated series featuring Blue Beetle is in development, marking Jaime Reyes’ transition from the DCEU to the DCU.

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are working on the series, with Miguel Puga as showrunner and director, and Cristian Martinez as the writer. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who directed and wrote the 2023 film, will serve as executive producers alongside John Rikard. Galen Vaisman will oversee the series for DC Studios.

While details, including cast contracts, are still being finalized, DC has received positive responses from actors interested in returning. The animated series will expand on the movie’s universe while crafting its own unique storyline. Success could potentially pave the way for another theatrical outing for Blue Beetle, with Jaime Reyes being the third character to don the superhero mantle.

The movie left audiences hanging with a clear setup for a sequel. Despite discussions about continuing the story, the DCEU’s decline and disappointing box office numbers likely spelled the end. Perhaps the hinted storyline from the mid-credits scene will find continuation in the animated series.
