The third season of Blue Exorcist is finally here after a very long break, and we on Fiction Horizon will be covering the story for you as usual. But, while we’re waiting for new episodes of this great show, some of you might want to reminiscence about what happened so far in the series. It’s been a while since the first season and second seasons premiered (Blue Exorcist has notoriously long hiatuses), and in this article, we have decided to bring you a quick recap of Seasons 1 and 2 of Blue Exorcist, so that you can keep following the current season without having to worry about some detail from the past.

Blue Exorcist Season 1 recap

The first season of Blue Exorcist adapted the initial manga arcs, but from Episode 18 to the end, it had an original anime ending that had nothing to do with the manga. This is important to know before we start the recap.

Rin is a teenager who seems to have the natural gift of constantly getting into trouble, although he always tries to do his best to meet the expectations of his twin brother Yukio and his father Shiro Fuyimoto, a Protestant pastor and eminent exorcist. At 15, he actually tries to find some part-time job, but without any concrete results. This very normal routine for him continues until he finally comes to know the dark secret behind his origins: Fuyimoto has actually acted as his guardian until then, as his real father is none other than Satan, the most powerful of all the demons operating in the world parallel to the human one.

After a fight with Shiro, Satan takes over the priest’s body and tries to take Rin, but Shiro manages to regain control for a moment and then sacrifices himself to save Rin.

Not long after that, Mephisto enrolls Rin in the True Cross Academy’s exorcist cram school, where his brother is an instructor. Thus begins Rin’s education and his story of becoming one of the most skilled exorcists in the world, while – at the same time – he has to learn how to work and get along with others while balancing Satan’s desires to get him.

From Episode 18 until the end of the season, the anime has an original story that involves an original character called Ernst Frederik Egin. He is Yuri’s father and claims to be the grandfather of Rin and Yukio Okumura. The goal of Ernst and his organization is to find and kill all of Satan’s relatives, as well as to rid the world of Demons; he even opened a Gehenna Gate to destroy Gehenna itself. There, Yukio was possessed by Satan for a while, but Rin managed to help him snap out of it before the brothers united their powers to close the gate and return things to normal.

Blue Exorcist Season 2 recap

The left eye of the Impure King, a powerful artifact, was stolen from the heart of the Academy. The thief’s motive remains to be determined, but one thing is certain: he will also try to get his hands on the twin artifact of the first: the right eye of the Impure King, kept in Kyoto. Aspiring exorcists, including Rin, are sent there as reinforcements, under the supervision of Shura. For his part, Yukio leads the investigation. Under the direction of Shura, Rin and the other seekers go to Kyoto to help the local exorcists, severely affected by an attack targeting the right eye of the Impure King.

Within the Myouda sect, the time has come for suspicion, and the members of the sect search for a traitor in their ranks. After having erupted his blue flames under the stunned gaze of the members of the Myouda sect, Rin is imprisoned, risking execution. While outside, the hunt for Mamushi continues. According to the superior of the Myouda sect, Rin seems to be the only recourse against the Impure King who threatens to transform Kyoto into a field of corpses. But – there is a problem: Rin is imprisoned and could well be sentenced to death.

Following the revelations of the superior of the Myouda sect and the appearance of the Impure King, the students of the Academy decide to take matters into their own hands and launch into battle. Faced with the imminent threat that the Impure King poses throughout the Kyoto region, Rin and Ryuji are charged with the most delicate of missions: setting up a barrier as close as possible to the monster so that its deadly miasma does not decimate the population.

Yukio, joined by members of the Myouda sect, confronts Todo, who is more powerful than ever after absorbing Garuda, the phoenix. Rin and Ryuji team up to defeat the Impure King before his miasma devastates Kyoto, but they are still missing something. Rin finally managed to take the Kômaken out of its sheath and from that moment on, everything rests on the shoulders of the son of Satan. Rin, helped by all the other exorcists, finally succeeded in defeating the Impure King. But before everything gets back to normal, between the secrets of some and the misunderstandings of others, many things will have to be put into perspective.
