Boba Fett Vs. Mandalorian: Differences and Who Would Win?
After Season 2 of the fantastic Disney+ show, The Mandalorian, we finally got confirmation that the fan-favorite Star Wars character, Boba Fett, survived falling into the Sarlacc Pit. Seeing how similar he and Mando (aka Din Djarin) look in their armor, some fans thought they were the same, which is false. So, if Boba Fett and The Mandalorian fought, who would win, and why?
It would be quite a close battle, but Mandalorian would eventually beat Boba Fett. He is younger, has more advanced weaponry, better equipment, armor maintenance, and single-handedly defeated more dangerous opponents.
Don’t get me wrong, though; Boba Fett was the best bounty hunter in the galaxy for a reason, sought after by Darth Vader himself. He would give Mando a lot of trouble, but it would, in the end, come to the equipment rather than skill. Let’s see the differences between Boba Fett and Din Djarin and why one would top the other in a fight.
Boba Fett Vs. Mandalorian: Differences
Although they wear quite similar armor, Boba Fett and The Mandalorian are not the same characters. It’s clear in the initial release before Season 1 of The Mandalorian TV show, where the producers announced: “After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe.”
So, they look almost the same; they are both incredibly gifted bounty hunters, raised under Mandalorian culture – how do they differ then? Let’s start with their origin stories.
Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, the best mercenary in the galaxy long ago. Jango was so incredible that the Empire decided to create an entire army of his 100% identical clones (barring some genetic modifications making them obedient to their authority and aging much faster).
Jango accepted to be used as a template for the clones only if they give him an unaltered, 100% DNA match clone. They had granted his wish, and he raised the clone as his son, naming him Boba.
Jango and Boba lived among the Kaminoans, but Jango did his best to raise Boba under Mandalorian traditions and culture, including their code of conduct and even the armor of the Mandalorian warriors. After Jango’s demise, Boba decided to honor his father by continuing his legacy, becoming one of the best bounty hunters the galaxy had ever seen.
Therefore, Boba isn’t a real Mandalorian but honors their codes and traditions. Din Djarin is quite similar, but he has more Mandalorian connections than Boba.
Din Djarin’s story began when he was still a child. His parents were killed, so a Mandalorian warrior saved him and raised him as his kin. Mando lived and learned the Mandalorian tradition and culture his entire life.
Even though he isn’t a true, born Mandalorian (just like Boba), he became one of them with his upbringing. Mandalorians such as Djarin – who were found, brought to Mandalore, and trained by the group – are called Foundlings. Boba was never a Foundling, as he wasn’t found, but rather a clone.
One other great difference between Boba and Din is the time in which they operated. Although their lives overlap, Boba was much more active before Djarin was born, let alone became a Mandalorian warrior. It’s not that important when they operated, but the conditions they operated in.
You see, Mando works in a time where all societal structures or governments have dissolved. There’s no stability, no law – only anarchy. That’s why one could say that Mando is having it much more difficult than Boba ever did. It’s hard enough to survive, let alone work as a mercenary or a bounty hunter.
Now that we know their origins, when, and how they operated, let’s determine who would win if the two ever fought. Bear in mind; I’m taking both characters in their prime, not aged as they are currently.
Boba Fett Vs. Mandalorian: Who Would Win and Why?
Boba Fett and Din Djarin are quite similar in so many aspects, but in the end, there would be a clear winner between the two if they ever fought. Mando would defeat Boba eventually, although it wouldn’t be easy at all.
First of all, if we compare their weapons, Mando has much more advanced weaponry and battle tactics. Boba usually operates with a blaster rifle, while Mando uses a pulse rifle with much more power.
Also, we’ve seen Mando use the Whistling Birds quite often – small, homing projectiles that whistle through the air before hitting the target with a small explosion. It’s quite an effective weapon used not only for attacking purposes but for tactics and escaping tough situations. We’ve never seen Boba Fett use them, so it’s unclear if he even has them in his armor.
That brings us to, well, their armor. Judging by appearance only, it’s clear that Din has superior armor. Even though he had seen so many battles, it’s still in pristine condition, made out of Beskar metal, and equipped with all sorts of gadgets and weapons.
Boba’s armor, although quite similar, is banged up and damaged. Additionally, Boba Fett’s armor was made out of Durasteel first (only later did he get one out of Beskar), which is quite a strong material but nowhere near Beskar-strong. Even their jetpacks aren’t a match, as Fett sports an old-school, banged-up jetpack, while Mando’s is almost as good as new.
Next, we have to address all the enemies they’ve defeated. Boba was an incredibly prolific bounty hunter – one of the best (if not the best) in the galaxy during his prime. Darth Vader specifically chose him to go after Han Solo – and Boba Fett did the job.
He had many more awesome stints, including battling his father’s killer, Mace Windu, to the point where they were both only one move away from killing each other before the fight was stopped – and Boba was only twelve years old at the time. Also, Boba did save Mando from certain death in the series, so that’s a point for him.
He did, however, perish after a blinded Han Solo pushed him into a Sarlacc Pit. He was presumed dead for a long time before reappearing in The Mandalorian Season 2, where we learn that he managed to get out of the pit, mostly because the Sarlacc couldn’t digest his armor and because a Krayt Dragon had devoured it.
However, Mando still has more impressive features and wins on his hands. That Krayt Dragon creature that devoured the Sarlacc, who nearly killed Boba Fett? Din Djarin killed one of those single-handedly, which is not only impressive but near impossible.
Mando also defeated numerous powerful opponents, such as Moff Gideon and entire squadrons of stormtroopers. But, what separates Mando from Boba Fett the most is the environment he operates in and still manages to survive.
You see, Boba was usually the hunter in his mercenary days – but Mando is the hunted. There’s a hit on his head, being one of the Galaxy’s most wanted. So, while Boba Fett hunted his bounties freely, Mando operates with a constant target on his back.
Therefore, although they are quite similar, Din Djarin, aka Mando, is just slightly more powerful than Boba Fett, which is why he’s my pick to win the fight between the two characters.
