Brad Pitt and David Ayer’s ‘Heart of the Beast’ Gets Its First Official Look, and the Alaskan Wilderness Has Never Looked More Brutal
Brad Pitt has never been one to stay still for long, and his next move looks every bit as punishing as audiences might hope. Fresh off the enormous success of his Formula One blockbuster ‘F1’, which debuted at the top of the box office and went on to gross $634 million worldwide, the actor is shifting gears entirely for his next Paramount project. Rather than roaring engines and asphalt, this one trades speed for survival in one of the harshest landscapes on Earth.
Director David Ayer is at the helm of ‘Heart of the Beast’, with the film being distributed by Paramount Pictures. Joining Pitt in the cast are J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe. The production brings together an impressive creative ensemble behind the camera as well, with Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton producing through their Wild Chickens Productions banner, alongside Ayer for Crave Films and Pitt for Plan B Entertainment.
GQ has now dropped the first official look at the film, and the image makes the premise immediately tangible. The shot shows Pitt’s weathered, bearded soldier crouched beside a military-style hard case near an orange tent, with a German Shepherd at his side and dense forest closing in around them. It is a quietly loaded image, and it sets the tone for exactly the kind of stripped-back, man-versus-nature story the film promises to be. ‘Heart of the Beast’ centers on a former Army Special Forces soldier and his retired combat dog who battle for survival after a plane crash deep in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness.
Additional details reveal that Pitt’s character and his German Shepherd are both dealing with PTSD, and that their plane crashes after the soldier suffers a heart attack mid-flight. The film is described as being about their struggle to get back to the mainland and survive the elements, with Pitt reportedly delivering a performance that blends strength with quiet humanity. Early word places the film in the same rugged survival register as Joe Carnahan’s ‘The Grey’.
Filming took place in Queenstown, New Zealand, which served as a stand-in for Alaska. The CinemaCon trailer previewed Pitt fending off bears, wolves, and treacherous river crossings alongside his loyal dog, with the footage building around a central bond between soldier and animal.
This marks the second collaboration between Ayer and Pitt, following their 2014 World War II tank drama ‘Fury’. Ayer most recently directed the Jason Statham vehicle ‘A Working Man’, and this reunion with Pitt feels like a natural escalation of the gritty, visceral filmmaking that has defined the director’s best work. Cinematography on the film comes from Mauro Fiore, with the script written by Cameron Alexander.
Paramount has confirmed ‘Heart of the Beast’ will arrive in theaters on September 25, 2026. With a primal setup, a director known for hard-hitting action, and Pitt at the peak of his commercial pull, the film already has considerable momentum heading into fall. Whether you are most drawn to the survival stakes, the dog, or the Ayer-Pitt reunion, share your thoughts on what this first look is doing for your anticipation of ‘Heart of the Beast’.
