Bucky Barnes Might Finally Get His Solo Story, and Sebastian Stan Already Has a Pitch Ready

Sebastian Stan has spent the better part of fifteen years as the MCU’s most reliable supporting player, popping up in blockbuster after blockbuster while quietly building an entirely separate career in prestige indie cinema. Between franchise commitments, he’s collected an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe, proof that there’s a lot more range to him than the metal arm and the brooding stare fans associate with Bucky Barnes.

That split identity has followed him for most of his career. He’s the actor who played a Soviet-programmed assassin in one film and Donald Trump in another, and it turns out he’s also been privately mulling over what a genuinely different kind of Bucky project could look like beyond the usual team-up formula.

Stan opened up about exactly that in a new profile from New York Magazine, revealing he recently floated a scaled-down, “Sicario-esque” Bucky Barnes movie directly to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. By his own admission, the pitch was made at least partly in jest, but the details he described sound anything but throwaway.

“We keep a real small budget,” Stan said, laying out the bones of the concept before diving into premise. The story he described centers on a man convinced he recognizes a figure from his past connected to the period when he was brainwashed, and who becomes consumed with tracking that person down.

“It’s about a guy who thinks he recognizes someone from his past that had something to do with when, you know, he was brainwashed and he gets obsessed with this person,” Stan continued, before adding that the character “goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is.” The comparison to ‘Sicario’, Denis Villeneuve’s tense, morally murky 2015 cartel drama, immediately signals a much darker register than anything the MCU has done with the character before.

It’s a natural extension of what’s always made Bucky compelling in the first place. Since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ first introduced him as a memory-scrambled assassin, his psychological wounds have often taken a back seat to the franchise’s larger action set pieces, even as ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ tried to dig into his guilt and slow path toward redemption.

A full solo film built entirely around that fractured identity has never materialized, and Stan’s comments suggest the idea is still very much on his mind, even as Bucky’s future points toward far bigger, cosmic-scale stakes. He’s set to return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, joining a massive ensemble cast in a story that couldn’t feel further removed from the quiet, character-driven thriller he described.

That contrast is probably part of why Stan framed the pitch as more of a passing thought than something actively in development. Marvel’s current slate has leaned hard into sprawling, interconnected event filmmaking rather than smaller character detours, making a stripped-down passion project a tough sell regardless of how compelling the concept sounds on paper.

Still, it’s easy to understand why the idea has struck a chord. Bucky Barnes has been part of the MCU since 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, making him one of the franchise’s longest-tenured characters without ever headlining a movie of his own, and that gap has only fueled the appetite for something built entirely around him.

For now, it remains exactly what Stan described: an offhand pitch born out of a magazine interview rather than an official greenlight. But with Marvel increasingly willing to experiment with tone across its slate, a grounded, ‘Sicario’-inspired Bucky thriller doesn’t feel like the longest shot in the world.
