Cate Blanchett drew attention at the 2026 Olivier Awards in London after a brief but sharp moment on the red carpet that was caught on video and quickly spread online.

The Oscar-winning actress, 56, attended the event on April 12 as a nominee for best actress for her role in The Seagull at the London Barbican Theatre. While walking the red carpet, she appeared to react to someone just outside the camera frame. She was seen raising her hand in a stopping gesture and saying, “Stop it.” Right after that, she made a middle finger gesture in the same direction.

The identity of the person she was responding to has not been confirmed. It is also not clear if it was a reporter or someone else positioned near the carpet.

Despite the moment, Blanchett continued with the event. She was there as part of a major theatre ceremony celebrating performances across London’s stage scene.

Her nominated role in The Seagull has been widely discussed in theatre circles, and reports from Deadline suggest the production could move to New York later in the year. The play also features actors Tom Burke and Emma Corrin.

For the event, Blanchett wore a black Lanvin dress with cut-out detailing. The design included exposed shoulder sections and a criss-cross shape across the front.

Outside of this appearance, Blanchett has often spoken about her complicated relationship with fame. In a past interview with Radio Times, she said, “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it: I am serious about giving up acting.” She also said, “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person.”

She has also reflected on her early life and how she entered acting by chance rather than planning it. She described how drama at school felt like a creative escape and later said she never expected it to become a career, until she was encouraged to apply for drama school and got in.

The red carpet moment has since sparked discussion online, with viewers debating what happened and what caused the reaction.

Events like this often show how quickly small moments can turn into viral stories, especially when celebrities are involved.
