Channing Tatum’s Gambit Comic Origins Possibly Set the Stage for His MCU Solo Movie

With the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU has expanded to include characters from various Marvel universes, such as the Blade universe, the Fox X-Men universe, and even the original Daredevil and Elektra movies.

While most of the cameos featured actors reprising their established roles, the film also introduced Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who currently doesn’t belong to any specific universe.

The actor’s journey with Gambit spans nearly two decades, beginning with his audition for X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006. Although he was cut from that film, he was set to “reprise” the role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) but was unavailable, leading to Taylor Kitsch taking the part.

Now, fans are calling for a Gambit solo movie, but with limited information about the character’s variant, as addressed in Deadpool & Wolverine, integrating him into the MCU could be challenging.

Screenrant has proposed an intriguing theory suggesting that Gambit’s comic origins lay the groundwork for a solo film. The theory points to Gambit’s reference to his nickname, “Le Diable Blanc” (The White Devil), and his claim of being born in the Void as hints at a deeper backstory tied to his comic origins. This nickname, predating his time with the X-Men, alludes to his early life in New Orleans and his role in the Thieves Guild.

The theory suggests that the TVA’s potential erasure of Gambit’s memory could explain his disconnection from his past, setting up a compelling narrative for a solo movie that explores his origins and identity. This approach might allow the project to be revisited and integrated into the MCU, despite the initial scrapping of the solo movie after Disney’s acquisition of Fox.

The actor has mentioned discussing the film with Iger and Feige but notes, “it’s in God’s hands now.”
